PLOT- Dr. Stephen Strange ( Benedict Cumberbatch) is a highly successful neurosurgeon, who destroys his hands in a car accident. Driven by his ego, Strange is desperate to regain control of his hands and get back to the operating table. When physical therapy and surgery are unsuccessful, he leaves New York to seek a mystical alternative in Nepal. Rather than a quick fix for his hands, Dr. Strange finds himself immersed in a world that he never knew existed.
LIKE- I have a confession; Marvel movies are a hard sell for me. Every time I go see a Marvel film, I feel like there is a 2/3 chance that I will be absolutely bored. I went into Doctor Strange with fairly low expectations. That said, Doctor Strange was a pleasant surprise and fun ride. It's creative, funny, and fast-paced. I often feel that the Marvel films sacrifice story and instead, have a glut of action/ fight sequences; Doctor Strange struck a good balance of both. The action sequences often utilized humor, that kept me engaged.
The humor is what made Doctor Strange work. There were many moments where the film could have taken a painfully cheesy turn ( I'm looking at you out-of-body experience), but the humor, kept these scenes from taking themselves too seriously.
Dr. Stephen Strange is a solid protagonist. He's cocky and unbearable at the start, but through the story arc, we see him transform into a truly likable character. Rachel McAdams is well cast as his fellow surgeon and former girlfriend, Christine. Cumberbatch and McAdams have chemistry.
The story-world is highly imaginative and visually impressive. I really liked the "Mirror World" and how it interacted with the real world. So clever.
DISLIKE- Why does Tilda Swinton always play the same type of characters? Seriously, always. Meh. Also, not liking the Thor crossover that was teased in the credits. I'm not a fan of the Thor films.
RECOMMEND- Yes. Doctor Strange is a high energy, creative film. This is a block-buster type of movie that you'll want to watch on the big screen. The Stan Lee cameo is a really good one, keep an eye out.
