We Tried Blue Apron

I was raised by a single mom who was excellent at making dinner reservations. We ate out a minimum of five days a week and when she "cooked" it was usually BLT's or grilled cheese sandwiches.

Mom cooked a major meal twice a year, Thanksgiving and Christmas. She always made a turkey with a stuffing recipe passed down from her mother, gravy, mashed potatoes, corn and a cool whip fruit salad. She never deviated from the holiday menu.

I wasn't keen on waking up before sunrise to get that turkey into the oven, so that we could eat at two, so I never got that one cooking lesson that my mom would have given me.  As a result, until I moved out on my own, I never learned basic cooking skills.

Fast-forward to now...I'm thirty-seven and I finally feel comfortable in a kitchen. Sure, there is plenty that I still need to master and knives make me nervous, but I have plenty of go-to recipes and I can bake amazing lemon bars.

We've been stuck in a food rut. I've been on a restrictive diet since January and baked fish is getting old. We needed to jazz up our home cooking.

Dan likes tech stuff and he watches Twit TV. On Twit, they sometimes advertise non-tech related products and they give special offers to viewers. One of these offers was for Blue Apron and as we were stuck in a food rut, we decided to give it a shot. They gave us two meals for free with a promo code.

We went to Blueapron.com and registered. We picked three meals- Chicken Piccata, Salmon Burgers and Three Cheese Calzones, and we set our delivery date for a Thursday. On the day of our delivery, the box arrived while I was at the grocery store. It sat in the sun on our porch.

I pulled out all of the ingredients to get them into the refrigerator. The items are packed with enormous, reusable ice packs that kept everything very cold. There was no problem with spoiled food. All of the items were labeled and individually packaged. The meat was vacuumed sealed in plastic. No leaks or issues with anything.

Each recipe comes on its own card with pictures and detailed instructions.

Blue Apron is not for people looking to make quick meals. This is not about convenience. The prep-work for each meal took over thirty minutes. Blue Apron seems to be geared towards people who like to cook or better yet, would like to learn how to cook, but who do not want the hassle of finding a recipe or going to the grocery store.

Blue Apron eliminates the hassle by providing the exact ingredients that you need to make an impressive meal. All three meals were excellent and they turned out pretty much exactly how they appear in the picture. We were so exhausted by all of the prep work, that we forgot to get a snap of the end product. However, we were impressed with ourselves and we enjoyed every meal.

It's pricy, is it worth the cost? Maybe.

On one hand, getting small amounts of spices and other ingredients does cut down on waste and might be economical, if it's not something that you commonly use. However, the cost per-person was about ten dollars, so at twenty for a meal, we could have easily eaten out somewhere inexpensive or paid less to cook it at home.

We came to the conclusion that we would likely try it again in the near future, but that it wouldn't be something that we would have delivered every week. It was fun and we liked that it added diversity to our dinners. We were impressed with the quality of the ingredients and the clarity of the instructions. We didn't like that the calories ran on the high side at around seven hundred a serving. That makes these meals a treat.

Although it's not geared towards the same audience, I'm a huge fan of Dream Dinners, where you go and assemble a months worth of meals that you freeze. The meals tend to have less calories and they are fast to make, yet they still have a homemade quality with no preservatives. I have not done Dream Dinners in a few years, but I'm eager to give them another try.

Gotta Try It- Joico Hair Shake

I'm a product whore.

All of the shelves and drawers in my bathroom are over-flowing with beauty products. It's such an addiction, that I have boxes of products stashed under my bed and hidden in my linen closet.

I blame my aunt.

Growing up, my mom rarely wore make-up and didn't use special skin products. My aunt was glamorous. I'd kill for those boots!

She believed in having a proper skin care routine, platinum blonde hair and the eternal quest for new lipstick shades. She saw my mom's failure to teach me in the ways of beauty products and my aunt took charge. My aunt took me for my first facial and bought me my first foundation. She also took me to her hair stylist before I started kindergarten. Unfortunately, this was the early 80's and the Dorothy Hamill cut was popular.

I was a little grumpy towards Dorothy Hamill and her damn hair.

Luckily, I survived my childhood hair trauma to have gorgeous locks. I have a fabulous hair stylist, Vanessa Bastian, who works out of the Carnelian Salon in Pasadena. I've been Vanessa's client for nearly ten years and she never fails to make me feel beautiful.

This week, Vanessa asked me to be her hair model for her job interview to be an educator for Joico. Honestly, I had never heard of Joico prior to Vanessa using their products to color my hair. I've since learned that Joico has been around for many years and is a major brand. It slipped my radar. She's been using Joico on my hair for the past year and I've noticed that my color lasts longer and is more vibrant. The color pops.

As part of the glamorous life of a hair model, Vanessa spent last Tuesday making sure that my hair was freshly colored and looking perfect. The color turned out amazing, but it's the new Joico product, Hair Shake, that blew me away.

My hair is straight with fine strands that typically go limp. Holding a curl takes a lot of patience and hairspray. Vanessa used Joico Hair Shake and boom, I had instant big hair.

Instant volume and it lasted the entire day. A miracle! When I first met Dan, he said that he liked "Big American Hair"...his wish was granted.

Vanessa had her interview today and she nailed it!

I was so excited about Hair Shake that I mentioned it during her interview. Zane, at Joico in Arcadia, told us that the product launch was today, May 1st and that the Hair Shake was already sold-out and back ordered. This is a huge deal! After telling Vanessa that she got the job, he ducked out and brought back a gift bag of Joico products for me.

I was given K-PAK- Shampoo, conditioner and an intense hydrator....plus a bottle of the very coveted Hair Shake. Thrilled does not begin to describe it.

I'm never having flat hair again!

Besides the present from Zane, Vanessa also gave me a Joico product gift bag for helping her out. Product heaven. Thank You Vanessa and Zane for the fun new toys.

If you can get your hands on some Hair Shake, buy every bottle. This is the best hair product that I've ever experienced. Love, Love, Love it!

Obligatory New Years Resolution Post 2015

It's that time again...time to make some new resolutions and to see how I did with the ones that I made for 2014.

Let's check out what I attempted to accomplish in 2014.

WRITING - My goal was four writing classes through UCLA Extension, which would keep me on target for finishing my certificate in three years. I ended up taking five classes and the summer off for traveling. I wanted to blog a minimum of five days a week. I managed to only do half of this goal, averaging 2.5 posts a week. I've boosted my blog readership, but I did not spend quite as much time as I would have liked promoting my blog. Thank you readers for sticking around!

READING - I exceeded my fifty book goal by two books, but I did not read any classics. My goal was one classic a month. I've made this goal for many years and it ends here. Who am I kidding, I definitely prefer modern books for pleasure reading!

EXERCISE/HEALTH - This time last year, I was very motivated by an episode of Modern Family, where Phil Dunphy walks the equivalent of CA-Canada on his treadmill. We started off strong, but with all of our travels and dealing with my aunt's estate, that quickly ended. I had also wanted to sign up for Yoga or Pilates, which sort of happened with my doing two months of steady Cardio Barre classes last spring. I wanted to eat a minimum of five fruits/veggies and track my food, also something that didn't happen. My fitness and exercise goals were a mess in 2014 and will be a priority for the new year.

TRAVEL - I didn't make it to a new state, but I did see a new country, Sweden. I also saw Lake Tahoe for the first time. I have a Southwest Airlines Companion Pass valid until the end of 2015, so time/money willing, Dan and I will do some United States traveling in the new year.

ORGANIZATION - I've done well in this area, mainly out of necessity from handling my aunt's estate. I have our file cabinet from last year orderly and I have a system in place. I'm even ready to go when it comes to tax time. I didn't have a chance to scan in the family photographs, but I have organized them all by date and the photo scanner has been bought. Organizing them was a bigger effort than I had initially realized, so I'm pleased with the progress made on this goal.

MISC - I did learn slightly more in Swedish than just saying poop (which is still hilarious to my stepkids). I would like to learn more, but I learned enough via an iPad App, that I was able to pick out words on signs and understand bits and pieces of overheard conversations. I didn't start volunteering, but I did donate a lot more money to several organizations this year. I'm not sure that money is better than time, but it's something. I reconnected with several friends, again though, not as much as I had hoped.

2015 RESOLUTIONS

1. Finish four more writing classes through UCLA Extension.

2. Send out my short stories ( fiction and non-fiction) to a minimum of fifteen publications/contests.

3. Finish the first half of my novel.

4. Blog a minimum of three times a week. Keep consistent with publishing blog content on a regular basis, rather than in large clumps when I'm on class breaks.

5. Start or join a writing group

6. Read a minimum of fifty books

7. Starting Jan 5th until June Cruise - no alcohol/sweets/ fried food ( only exception is Jeep Jamboree or other special occasion)

8. Log food and exercise in daily notebook.

9. Starting Jan 5th, attend regular exercise sessions with trainer. Make working out a priority in 2015.

10. Travel to a new state or country ( hopefully both and several)

11. Scan and organize 1/4 of family photographs. Print and frame family photographs to hang in both homes.

I'm keeping it less broad this year, focusing on my two top goals, writing and health. Here is to a healthy and productive 2015!
