Europe 2014 - Flyghotellet

Located in Bromma, a suburb of Stockholm, the Flyghotellet was our home for five nights during the first half of our time in Sweden. Although conveniently located to bus stops/tube station, the Flyghotellet is far enough away from the center of Stockholm ( about thirty minutes), that it's really not a hotel for tourists. We picked it for its close proximity to where my step-children live. It was easy for us to visit them every day, the primary purpose of our trip.

As you might have guessed from its name, Flyghotellet means "Flight Hotel" and the lobby is decked out in an aeronautical theme.

It was a basic hotel and our room was a little small, but I was impressed with the thoughtfulness that the owners and staff gave to making the most out of their property. Everyone was very friendly and the little touches went a long way. The lobby had a coffee machine and light snacks that were available twenty-four hours. There was a little computer center.

There was a roof top patio with deck chairs and views of the neighborhood.

The elevator (or Hiss) was covered with all types of announcements. We were never bothered by the "renewing", but I love the word choice. It sounds so much more positive than remodeling.

The room was small and basic, but it really had everything that we required. Unfortunately, the picture that I took of the bed didn't turn out, because I wanted to show the reading lights. I really appreciated having individual reading lights, but the one problem, was that the lights were mounted too low and both of us kept bashing our heads! We had two big chairs in the corner, which we used as a charging station for all of our electronics. Between the two of us, we have a lot of gadgets that all came along on vacation. I can't remember what Dan brought, but I had two Kindles, a Laptop, iPad, iPhone and a digital camera. That charging station may have been the most important area of our room!

There was a unusual heat wave going on during our visit, making everyone miserable. Hot, humid and sticky. Since they generally don't need it, our hotel didn't have air conditioning. On the second night of our stay, we returned to our room to find a fan had been set up for us. I was impressed that they had gone ahead and anticipated our needs, before us asking for a fan. Not only did they give us a fan, but they already had it set up and running, so that the room was cool when we arrived.

Breakfast was included in our stay. It was a unmanned buffet in the basement of the hotel. Most mornings, we were the only people at breakfast. It was quiet and we caught up on current events, as they always had the BBC News running.

The breakfast included a good variety of breads, cereals, yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, meats and cheeses. There was a children's play area off to the side of the breakfast room, which was another thoughtful touch.

The Flyghotellet might not be a fancy hotel, but they definitely try hard to make guests happy. It's a decent place to stay if you are in the Bromma area and I imagine that we will return there on future trips to visit the kids.

UK August-October 2013- Radisson Blu Edwardian Sussex Hotel

Our last week in London, we stayed at the fantastic Radisson Blu Edwardian Sussex Hotel.

There are many reasons that the Radisson Blu Edwardian Sussex is a great hotel, but the primary reason is its excellent location. It's just a block behind all of the shops on Oxford street, about a five minute walk to Selfridges. Dan had an appointment at the United States Embassy ( 10-15 min walk) and he had to work from the hotel, so I was left to explore London on my own for several days. In addition to the shopping, the hotel is a five minute walk to Hyde Park. I explored the park and walked through it to the museums and Kensington Palace. Staying here was a good compliment to our first week in London, when we stayed across town at the Strand Palace Hotel. I was able to really cover a lot of ground in London.

Although part of the Radisson Hotel chain, this is a small, boutique hotel. It has all of the charm of being a Historic building, but with modern renovations and decor. Here are a few shots of the check-in area. The crazy poodles were a fun touch.

According to staff at registration, we managed to score one of the better rooms, as it was in a quiet location at the very end of the hall on the first floor. In addition to being quieter, it was supposedly a little larger and a room that repeat hotel guests often request. When we opened the door to our room, the bathroom was on our right and we were greeted with a long hallway that had a big closet. The room was small, but it maximized space and had plenty of storage.

The room was very comfortable and cozy. It included little touches that I love, like a thick throw blanket ( I always sleep with extra blankets at home) and a stack of current fashion magazines.

One of my favorite features of the room was a button on the inside of our door that we could press to inform Housekeeping when we would like our room cleaned. This is so much better than hanging a notice on the door. Every hotel should have this feature!

The staff at the Radisson Blu Edwardian Sussex Hotel was always friendly and available to help us with any need. The reception staff was more like a concierge and I felt like a valued guest during my entire stay. Admittedly, it's not the cheapest hotel, but I think that you're paying for the location. It's close to so much and it's in a very safe neighborhood. I went out alone by myself at night and I never felt uncomfortable. I hope that future trips to London will include staying here.

UK August-October 2013- Legoland Windsor Resort Hotel

As a special treat, we surprised the kids with a two night stay in a pirate themed room at the Legoland Windsor Resort Hotel. I think that us adults may have been more excited than the kids to see our themed room.

Just like the theme park, no detail is spared at the Legoland Windsor Resort Hotel.

The lobby is full of Lego characters and it has an enormous pool filled with Lego bricks waiting to be turned into unique creations.

On the second night of our trip, we spent some time playing in the Lego pool. Zoe showed pride in her country and created a Swedish flag. Dan made a Lego man to hold my blog business card. We put the creations on the display shelf for everyone to see and they were judged in a daily contest. We didn't win, but a lot of people saw my blog advertisement! We were given participant stickers for entering.

Our Pirate room was extremely cool.

At check-in, the kids were given a clue map that led them on a treasure hunt around our room that ended with a secret code that they used to unlock a treasure chest that was guarded by a monkey. Inside of the chest, they were rewarded with a treasure of Lego toys to keep.

In addition to the treasure chest toys, there was a giant tub filled with Lego bricks for the kids to play with in the room.

Our room had two bedrooms with a shared bathroom in the middle. My favorite design touch was the Lego butterfly and dragonfly on the ceiling. The room was spacious and comfortable. The kids really liked their bunk beds.

Overall, the room was brilliant, except for one problem. We decided to stay here, because four- year old Felix was in a pirate-phase, but he was frightened by the monkey on the treasure chest. He didn't say anything until we were leaving the hotel, but at night, with the monkey near the kid's bunk beds, he had been scared. If we stay at the resort in the future, we will pick a different themed room!

We ate in the hotel's Bricks Family Restaurant  three times, twice for breakfast and once for dinner. Here's the low-down about Bricks. The food is served buffet style, including the drinks and the buffet area is fairly small, although the restaurant seats a large number of people. We had breakfast included in our stay and so did everyone else, so breakfast is a chaotic, crowded mess. Everyone is grumpy and in a rush, trying to eat fast before the park opens. In the future, we would probably just pay to eat elsewhere.

Dinner at Bricks is to be avoided at all costs. The food was nearly inedible. It was so bad, that I filled up on Spaghetti-O's from the kid's section of the buffet. Zoe, who loves ice cream, picked at her dessert as it melted. The food is just disgusting. Disgusting and incredibly overpriced. My adult dinner (Spaghetti-O's) was 18.95 ( pounds, which you can practically double to get the exchange rate). Gulp.

You shouldn't eat there, but in its defense, Bricks had two things going for it.

The staff were saints. They were quick, efficient and ran the mad-house with a smile. During our dinner, I was alone with Zoe, as Dan had to take Felix to the emergency room. I didn't have any cash and they will not accept tips on credit cards. Our server was awesome and completely understanding that I would have to come back with her tip the next day. They even kept the restaurant open a little late for us, as this emergency had us arriving to eat as they were closing. If they had not stayed open, we wouldn't have had another option for dinner. I was very grateful. Excellent, above and beyond customer service. This customer service extends to the entire hotel, as the staff was exceedingly friendly and helpful.

Also, like the rest of the hotel and theme park, Bricks has a cute and creative Lego design, characters sprinkled throughout the restaurant. Don't eat there, but go take a peek at it!

A stay at the Legoland Windsor Resort Hotel is a special experience and well-worth the extra expense. As a bonus, you can go on all of the water rides, get soaked and go back to your hotel room to change into dry clothes! The kids have already asked if we are going back this summer, which we may need to our vacation plans.
