Humphreys Half Moon Inn & Suites

During their visit, we went with Dan's parents to San Diego and stayed on Shelter Island at Humphreys Half Moon Inn & Suites. Our stay was for three nights and the pictures in this review were taken over the course of our trip, during different times of the day.

Humphreys Half Moon Inn & Suites was built in the early 1960's and it still looks it. A visit to Humphreys is like stepping back in time. I expected to see Don Draper having a cocktail poolside. The resort is completely decked out in a Hawaiian theme, from the plumeria trees perfuming the parking lot, to the longhouse style architecture in the lobby.

My first impression of the resort was positive. Yes, it's an older hotel, but the theming is fun and it actually does feel like being in Hawaii, especially with the amazing weather that we experienced during our stay. The porter who took our luggage to our rooms was exceptionally friendly and helpful, giving us tips for local restaurants. Shortly after settling in our room, he saw us struggling with the pool gate and he jumped-in to resolve the issue, going to reception and making new keys.

The room was dated, but large and comfortable. Again, it very much looks like something that I've visited in Hawaii. The primary problem with the room was lack of lighting. The light was so dim, that I could only read on my backlit Kindle. Shades outside of the window, prevented natural light from touching the room. My in-laws also complained of the light issue.

Humphreys Half Moon Inn & Suites is a popular place for events. We saw a wedding take place on the lawn. Here are before and after pics of the wedding set-up.

Humphreys has a summer concert series, located on a different lawn area. On the weekend that we visited, they had a UB40 concert that was sold out. We could hear the music from the pool and Dan's parents said that they found a spot in the pool area, where they had a good view of the stage.

I'd recommend checking the concert schedule prior to booking a stay. Our visit was in the early fall and although the concert was full, the pool area was busy, but not packed. The pool is a good size, but there are not very many lounge chairs, and I can imagine that it's a nightmare on a busy summer day. Also, I think the crowd could be dramatically different depending on the band. The pool was filled with middle-aged ( slightly older than us) adults, some with kids. There was a lot of drinking going on and skimpy swim-suits. It had a bit of a Las Vegas vibe  and although I wouldn't say "Don't Bring Your Kids", there are probably better family resorts.

Parrots on property

Twice, we ate breakfast at Humphrey's main restaurant. Excellent food and stunning views of the marina.

My cantaloupe wearing a hat was a delightful surprise.

One of the biggest reasons to stay at Humphreys, is it's a short walk to many excellent restaurants. On our first night, we ate at the Brigantine Seafood Restaurant. The swordfish was outstanding.

We also dined at Bali Hai (song stuck in your head?), another tropical throwback to the 50's/60's. The food was very good, but beware of the ridiculously strong Mai Tais, made with only alcohol. Apparently this is authentic, but I say bring on the fruit juice! It's a good thing that we were a five minute walk down the road.

I was having a mostly positive experience at Humphreys, until our final day. We spent Sunday morning/early afternoon at the USS Midway and returned to find that our room had not been made-up. No big deal, it was still early in the day. We called down to housekeeping, to let them know that we would be spending a few hours by the pool, and to request that it be made during our absence. No problem, they would send someone right up.

After the pool, it was still a mess and we didn't have dry towels. We noticed that they were near our room, so we took a walk around Shelter Island to give them a little more time. We returned and it was still a mess. It was five o'clock. We took turns showering and used the wet towels.

After showering, still no peep from housekeeping, so we gave them another call. We told them that we would head to the mall for an hour or so, again, we got reassurances that someone would be right over.

We returned at six-thirty and still nothing. This time we went to the lobby to complain. We had dinner reservations and needed to get ready. We told the front desk clerk, David, that we would sit in reception until he verified that it had been cleaned. We heard nothing from him. He ignored us and as we could see our room from reception, we noticed that housekeeping went inside about 7:20 and came out fifteen minutes later.

What bothered me most, was the lack of customer service. We never received an apology for the inconvienance and we were never given a reason for the delay/ mix-up. If they had told us that they were short on staff or would be late, that would have been much better than giving us the run-around. I think that they forgot to clean our room and that the staff had left for the day, sending them scrambling.

The room looked okay, but then we found some passive-aggressive stunts. They didn't move anything, except for my medication, which I always leave in the same spot. After hunting for ten minutes, I found it wedged near the coffee maker and hidden behind tea/coffee packets. The shower nozzle had been moved to point directly up at the ceiling. These seemed like deliberate moves.

Dan complained at check-out to David, who had been at reception to deal with our problems the evening prior, was very rude. Our experience took a nose-dive with that experience at check-out. I doubt that we would give Humphreys Half Moon Inn & Suites a second chance.

Hyatt Regency Indian Wells

In 2015, we were lucky to spend two weekends at the gorgeous Hyatt Regency Indian Wells. Our first trip was in late August, when Dan and I decided to be spontaneous and run away to the desert for a romantic weekend. We loved it so much, that we brought Dan's parents back to the resort in September.

Indian Wells is a desert community located near Palm Springs. The Hyatt Regency is a sprawling property, with a golf course, conference center, spa, and enormous pool complex. There is little need to ever leave the property. It's a destination resort.

The photographs in this post were all taken during our first visit. Speaking of first, here was my first shots of the lobby, taken while Dan was checking us in. Pretty!

We had a standard room, which has a sunken living area. It reminded me of the Venetian/Palazzo hotels in Las Vegas. Spacious, tasteful, and very comfortable, especially the bed. Vacation snooze = mandatory

The view from our balcony was of the pool complex. The patio was a lovely feature, but too hot to use in summer, even at night. The desert heat is intense! Luckily, the pool was open late, so we kept cool in the water.

The only minor disappointment was the small bathtub, not worth a soak.

The Hyatt Regency Indian Wells has three restaurants, two located just off of reception, with patios facing the golf course. The breakfast burritos are amazing and not to be missed!

The best part of the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells, was the pool complex. It's vast.

At the entrance to the pool, they even have bicycles to borrow. In the heat, no one was taking them up on the offer, but it's a nice option.

The Roadrunner Cafe offers table dining and poolside service. Chips, guacamole and beer are mandatory pool food.

A large section of the pool is open to everyone, but geared towards families. There are pool toys and at night, kid friendly movies on a large screen. On the lawn adjacent to the pool, they have ping-pong and foosball tables. We found a mini-golf course and a volleyball net.

We kept walking and planted ourselves in the adult pool area. This isn't adult, meaning topless, it's just an area for over eighteen, meaning it should be quieter. I say should, because when we arrived on our first visit, we found drunk adults in a rowdy game of catch, with a nerf football that they stole from the kid's pool.

Beyond that first visit, we usually found the adult pool to be quiet. On our trip with Dan's parents, we even splurged on a cabana, which gave us some shade and a private patch of lawn. On a hot day, the cabana would be worth every penny.

The best part of the adult pool was the bean bag floats. These are the best pool floats ever.

Doesn't Dan look relaxed? Check out his view...pretty, swirly clouds.

This review wouldn't be complete without mention of the spa. Dan's mom and I, both got European facials. My skin was left glowing.

The spa facility is a separate building and it's fairly small. However, it had the most important thing that is mandatory in all spas; a quiet spot to read and sip cucumber water. When I was waiting for my facial, instead of checking out the steam room, I curled up with my book and a warm blanket. Heaven. They also had some amazing mini-scones. Double heaven.

The Hyatt Regency Indian Wells is my new favorite weekend getaway spot. I can't wait for pool weather to return, so that we can head back to the desert!

2nd Anniversary Trip- Bally's Las Vegas

Six months is a long time to go between Vegas trips. We were itching to go, so it was an easy choice for our second anniversary mini-vacation.

We woke up early on a Saturday and drove to Big Bear Lake to meet with our contractor. After a quick meeting and a detour to the zoo ( we had to visit the raccoon saloon), we were on our way. These two are just plotting their jail break!

The primary reason for our Big Bear detour, was we wanted to see how easy it is to visit Vegas from the mountain. Unfortunately, our experiment was thrown out, when we encountered major traffic in Baker. Using the traffic app Waze, we were able to find an alternative route through Death Valley. Ultimately, when we rejoined the freeway an hour-ish later, we ran into the same vehicles that we had left behind. However, driving through the desert was a prettier, more adventurous route. Some of the road was just dirt!

We arrived at Bally's in the late afternoon.

Bally's is an older property, with a prime location in the middle of the strip. It was an easy walk to Paris and Bellagio. Because it's not as new or glitzy as other properties, the deals are good. Upon check-in, we were offered a spa suite upgrade for forty more a night. We took the offer. Here is a look at our suite.

The entry-

We had a partial strip view, where we could see the Bellagio fountains and the Eiffel Tower. The decor looked dated in style, but definitely on the newer side. It made me think of Mad Men.

The major room feature was the jacuzzi tub. It was huge. Unfortunately, the jacuzzi had a blown fuse. and although we called maintenance, it wasn't repaired until the last night of our stay. We had several bubble-less baths.

Our only other room issue, was noise on the Sunday of our stay. I'm not sure if it was coming from Drai's or a club at Paris, but there was loud, thumping dance music until early in the morning. I couldn't sleep. Other than that specific issue, the room was very quiet.

On either side of the tub, we had closets ( tons of storage) and next to the closets, his and her vanities.

View fullsize IMG_2129.jpg

The toilet and shower were tucked in the back. The shower was very small and darkly lit. It's like the room underwent a remodel, but they didn't touch the shower.

The bed was very comfortable and I liked the sitting area. Overall, this was a very inviting and spacious room, definitely a bargain. Also of note, all of the staff were very friendly and welcoming, especially noticed at check-in and the valet. Bally's is old, but it has a nice vibe.

We didn't spend much time inside the casino and we didn't eat at any of the restaurants inside Bally's. We did however, have a drink at the Indigo Lounge.

We wandered in on Halloween night, to find it practically empty. A small middle-age ( older than us) crowd gathered to hear a live 80's cover band. The band was okay, but the bartenders kept all of the TV's running during the show. It was distracting to us and disrespectful to the band. We made the mistake of ordering off of the Halloween special menu. Here is what we got...

Two Kool-Aid tasting Bacardi drinks in pumpkin sippy cups and tee-shirts. The drinks were awful, the shirts unnecessary. We ended up leaving it all in the lounge. The vibe of the Indigo Lounge just felt wrong, and although it was inexpensive, it was a waste of our time. Here is a picture of the lounge the next day.

Bally's and Paris are connected via an internal walkway. That night, we had dinner at Yong Kang Street, a Chinese dumpling and noodle house that features dim sum carts. We were exhausted from the drive and famished, causing me to forget to take pictures of the experience. If you like dim sum, it's not to be missed. The food is reasonably priced and the atmosphere is fun.

After dinner, we headed to the Fashion Show Mall. Dan had forgotten to pack nice shirts ( I'll have to use that excuse the next time I want to go shopping on vacation), so we went to Nordstrom to pick up a few nice things. I'm a huge Nordstrom fan and I have to admit, that the men's department in Vegas, has the best stuff. It's unique to what is sold in Southern California stores, more playful designs and vibrant colors. Louder clothes. I snuck in a quick peek in my department and came away with an adorable faux fur vest. Happy Anniversary to us!

Even though it was Halloween, there was very little evidence of anyone celebrating it in Vegas. The best we saw was five college-aged girls dressed up as different versions of Britney Spears. They totally rocked it!  I prefer Christmas to Halloween, so I was pleased to see this in the mall. Hey Santa, I saw a lot of things in Nordstrom that I'm adding to my list...
