Vegas with Dan's Parents- Just off the I-15

Usually the drive to Vegas is a straight shot in excitement to begin the vacation and the drive home is just as fast, usually because it's late at night with work coming in the morning. On this most recent trip to Vegas, we had the luxury of a leisurely drive home and decided to make some I-15 detours.

Zzyzx Road. If you haven't taken the off ramp, you know that you're curious. It's impossible to drive to Vegas and not make note of this funny named street. I looked it up and it was named by Curtis Howe Springer. Springer was the proprietor of the Zzyzx Mineral Springs and Health Spa that opened in 1944. He named it, because he claimed that it would be the last word in the English Dictionary. I think that it was a ploy to drum up business. In 1974, Springer was arrested on a litany of charges and the government reclaimed the land. It's now a the Desert Studies Center.

If you turn left off of the freeway and follow Zzyzx to where the pavement ends, this is what you will find.

Here I am on the salt flats.

It's vast and beautiful. The pictures do not do it justice. The next time that you are driving to/from Vegas, take an extra fifteen minutes and check it out.

The other place that I have always wanted to check out is Calico Ghost Town in Yermo.

We arrived late in the day, within the last two hours of closing. When we pulled up to the gate, the employee waves us in for free. I'm not sure exactly why, but my guess is that they might let everyone in for free late in the day, after the shows and other activities have ended. We didn't care about these, so it was a good savings for us. After having visited, I'm not sure that the extras would have been worth the fee.

Here is a picture of the entrance to the town.

Calico was a Silver Mine boom town in the 1880's with a population of over a thousand. The price of silver dropped in the mid-1890's and the town dried up. Walter Knotts bought the town in the 1950's and restored the buildings creating the current tourist attraction. Here is an information sign.

We went on a train ride that showed parts of the mine and camp that are only accessible by the train. There was a small charge for the ride that lasted approximately ten minutes. It's worth it, as the narration on the train provided a lot of interesting facts about the town and about silver mining. Here is a structure that was a house for one of the miners.

We also paid a small entrance fee to go inside part of the Maggie Mine. It takes about ten minutes to walk through and was also filled with interesting facts and provided us a chance to cool off from the hot desert temperatures.

Inside the mine.

Here are some creepy dummies that are supposed to be the Mulcahy Brothers, who lived in the mine for twenty years.

The exit to the mine is a steep set of stairs. We got a workout walking around Calico.

At the top of the stairs, the exit to the mine, there is a sign reminding everyone about the real dangers still present.

Here I am at the look out point above the mine.

Calico was a nice little stop, but it is very much a tourist trap. It's filled with stores like this..

All very cutesy and very Knott's Berry Farm. There is some real History here, but it's often buried beneath the tourist bits.

I was gleeful to discover The Mystery Shack, which used to be at Knott's Berry Farm, is alive and well in Calico. We didn't have a chance to go inside of it, but I asked and employee and he told me that only a few things have been modified and it's mostly the original show. I love the Mystery Shack!

Overall, I am glad that we stopped and even more glad that we didn't have an entrance fee. I think that it would have felt like a rip off if we had paid the fee. They definitely made some money off of us with the mine entrance and train ride. I wish that it had been less commercial. It's even more of a turn off to hear that they have ghost hunts and Halloween events. It feels like the Historical significance of the place is cheapened to cater to people who want the cheesy version of the old west. Meh. It's fun, but doesn't feel very authentic.

Vegas With Dan's Parents - Pinball Hall of Fame

One of the coolest Vegas attractions that probably gets overlooked with everything else is vying for your attention in Sin City, is located just off the strip on East Tropicana...Tim Arnold's Pinball Hall of Fame!

Located in a dimly lit strip mall with an unassuming sign, it's easy to overlook. It's in a dodgy area across from the now defunct Liberace Museum, however, a mere five-minute drive from the strip, it is well worth the trip.

The name is a bit of a misnomer, as the Pinball Hall of Fame has not only Pinball machines, but a variety of classic arcade games and my favorite, an air hockey table. I rock at air hockey!

There are many things that make this place so awesome. It's interactive. It's not just a museum, you can touch and play all of the machines. They have some very old games here, even as far back as the 1930's. Some of the old machines are fairly tame and dull for modern sensibilities, but it's just cool to be able to play something from the past. Most of the machines have a card with historical information and dates on the game and specifically on the origins of the particular machine. The prices are mostly low, especially for the older games, so ten dollars worth of quarters will carry you quite far.

The hall of fame is a charitable organization. They donate the proceeds to various groups.  Here is a picture of one of their donation checks. That's a lot of quarters!

A big brouhaha occurred when Elton John used the Pinball Hall of Fame for a video shoot. For his use of the space, he agreed to give them money to be donated to charity and free tickets to his Vegas show. He never made good on his promise and his reps didn't get back to the owners of the museum. It made it to the local papers.

Here is a picture of one row of Pinball machines. The space is quite large and they have about eighty more machines in storage that they use to rotate out. We were told that if you are looking for a specific machine to call a month ahead and if they have it in storage, they will make efforts to get it into the hall for your visit. Very cool!

I love gators...so one of my favorites is Wack-A-Gator!

One of the better Pinball Machines is the Ripley's Believe it or Not.

Here is an old basketball game.

Playing it for the first time, Dan managed to get the high score on Mad Planets! It looks like having a classic arcade machine in our living room has sharpened his overall gaming skills!

Lastly, leaving the Pinball Hall of Fame, we saw this great handicap parking space sign in the parking lot.

Hollywood Tourist Traps - Part Three

Our third and final stop was at the Hollywood Wax Museum. This place is right down the road from the much more upscale Madame Tussauds, but there is zero competition as these two wax museums are nowhere in the same league. This place can best be summed up with the two word phrase, awesomely bad.

The Hollywood Wax Museum is best done with a bit (or a lot) of alcohol. Unfortunately, I had to go through the museum sober due to cold medication, but after a few beers at Pig N' Whistle, Dan really had a great time at the wax museum. I have lots of hilarious photos as evidence, but unfortunately, cannot share them on this blog to protect his identity and dignity! My silly, done sober, pictures, I will happily post, as I have no shame.

The first thing that's great about the museum, is the wax figures are so poorly done, that it is often a guessing game as to who they're supposed to represent. Sometimes you get help with the figure having been placed in a famous setting or certain costume, but really the figures usually don't look much like the actor. We had a great time guessing. I am not just talking about actors of yesteryear, but really famous contemporary actors. Clearly, the "artists" who work here, could not get hired at Tussauds. Or perhaps, the figures are first try cast-offs for Tussauds? Either way, it's much more entertaining that they don't look good.

The second great thing, is you are free to touch the figures and pose with them however you wish. This leads to much hysterical laughing and incriminating photos. Dan had a great idea that we should come back with props and costume changes to get the most out of the pictures. I don't think that we stopped laughing the entire time we were at the museum.

When you first enter, there is a mock up of The Black Pearl with Johnny and Orlando. Clearly this is a recent addition and major showcased attraction. They even have cannon blasts going off at odd intervals, just enough to make me jump.

Just past the pirates set up is the entrance for the horror chamber. No Thanks! I am huge chicken when it comes to being startled and I just knew in my gut that there was a live person pretending to be a wax figure waiting to scare me. Even though the figures look completely fake, they still give me the creeps, even the ones that are not horror related. House of Wax made a big impression on me. What if thats a real person under there??? We skipped the horror chamber,

Here I am with the first celebrity that made us go, "who is that supposed to be?".

I still don't think it looks that much like Pacino. Note how I am creeped out to get too close to it. I'm not touching that thing!

Here's a few more that don't look like the celebrity.

Jennifer Garner

This one is my favorite, because it looks nothing like Megan Fox.

Poor Brad Pitt, this is awful.

The only reason this is recognizable is due to the Titanic set up. That the guy has blond hair, is about as much of a resemblance that the figure bears to Leonardo.

Keanu.

This is recognizable as Cameron Diaz, but it is so unflattering, that I think she ought to sue the museum.

So should Drew..so, so unflattering.

Here are some silly pictures..

Me with Sandler. He sort of looks right, if you squint.

Guitar lesson with The King.

Indy! My picture with the Christian Bale figure that doesn't look like CB, didn't turn out. Harrison (definitely Indy Harrison and NOT Star Wars Harrison) is the heartthrob runner up!

Being sassy with Lucy.

lounging with Hef.

A few funny close ups.

Extreme Chan!

Wax Twilight.

This just keeps making me laugh. I think that Tobey should join the lawsuit that Cameron and Drew are starting.

Bottom Line- Have some drinks at a bar and head to The Hollywood Wax Museum. We left feeling like we had gotten more than our money's worth of entertainment. Don't have high expectations for a polished museum or great looking figures, just go to take goofy pictures.
