Virgin Atlantic Upper Class Experience

Less than twenty-four hours after arriving home from our Alaska trip, we booked a flight to England. On our cruise, we had learned that my father-in-law's illness was actually cancer that was progressing fast. We are grateful to have arrived in England with enough time to see him before he passed. We were even able to share our pictures from Alaska with him. Although the trip was very difficult and emotional, we treasured the time that we were able to spend with our family and friend's in England. It obviously wasn't a planned holiday, but we still did a few touristy things and I took pictures with the intention of blogging about our trip.

I'd be remiss if I didn't share our spectacular experience flying Upper Class with Virgin Atlantic. My in-laws insisted on paying for our plane tickets and also insisted that we not fly economy. This was so generous and thoughtful of them, especially during such a difficult time.  My father-in-law is a former British Airways flight engineer and although we first looked to book with British Airways, the prices for last minute tickets were astronomical. Virgin Atlantic wasn't cheap, but it was less than half the price of British Airways.

Additionally, the Virgin Atlantic Upper Class ticket comes with some nice perks. The biggest for us was the tickets come with a chauffeured ride to/from the airport. This saved us a lot of stress and money. It was particularly nice in England, since initially we had opted to skip renting a car. My in-laws live about an hour from the airport and having a ride to their home, especially after getting very little sleep, was much appreciated.

When we arrived at the airport, we were taken to a special entrance and greeted curbside by two Virgin Atlantic employees. They checked our ID's, took our luggage, and handed us our boarding passes. The process took minutes. We were whisked through a private security area and taken to the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse. From exiting the car to ordering a cocktail in the lounge, it took maybe ten minutes. Zero hassle.

LAX's Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse has a restaurant set up and several lounge areas. Wanting to try every specialty cocktail on the menu, we had two rounds of drinks and ordered several dishes to share. Everything was fabulous. Here's what we ate-

Korean Beef Wholemeal Tacos

Butter Lettuce Salad with Chicken

Chili Crab Toast

Miso Donuts

California Sparking Wine Jelly

The Upper Class section of the plane was filled with individual pods that convert to beds. We were a little bag with toiletries and we were offered pajamas. What I liked most about the seats was that when they're in chair configuration, they have a footrest.  It was very comfortable for the entire flight. I also liked that each seat faced the aisle. I could get up and not disturb other passengers. I prefer aisle seats for this reason. I dislike the feeling of being boxed in.

View fullsize IMG_0009.jpg

Here's a look at the pods in bed conversion. I have trouble sleeping on planes, but I was able to snooze for about four hours.

Virgin Atlantic is all about fun. In the spirit of fun, they have a bar in the Upper Class section. The bar was often manned by a flight attendant, but when they were busy, it was also open for passengers to help themselves. I love the idea of the bar, but if I'm able to fly Upper Class in the future, I will pick a seat away from the bar. It got noisy and rowdy. You can't see it from the picture below, but there are bar stools around the perimeter of the bar, holding about 8-10 passengers.

For dinner, I had a green salad, steak, and a chocolate cake. My favorite part was the adorable airplane shaped salt and pepper shakers!

After dinner, we were given a breakfast form to fill out. The choices included everything from a Full English Breakfast to lighter options, like cereal or yogurt. Two hours prior to landing, I was woken up by the flight attendant with my breakfast tray.

Our experience upon arriving in Heathrow was also a breeze. The only hiccup is they didn't have a car that could hold all of our luggage, so we had to split up and take separate cars. We didn't have this problem on the way home, as we called in advance and arranged to have a larger vehicle pick us up. Living in America, we forget that many of the vehicles in Europe are smaller.

The return trip home was similar with regard to the expedited arrival experience and security. We had a much further walk through Heathrow to get to the Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse. Dan took this picture of me with the queen at the Duty Free shop. I love the reaction of the guy in the background. He works there, he must see other people taking this shot. Right?

The Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse at Heathrow is massive; much, much larger than the one at LAX. There are several dining options and lounge areas, including one with a view of the runway. The lounge offers complimentary spa treatments and has a Bumble and Bumble Salon. I adore Bumble and Bumble! It is definitely not a bad place to spend your pre-flight time. I love the swinging bubble chairs.

We only had an hour, so we went for cocktails and lunch. Here's what we ate-

Confit Asian Duck Bao

Cauliflower Soup

Pan Fried Rainbow Trout

The Clubhouse Cheese Burger

Salted Caramel Ice Cream

Warm Doughnut

Appetizer plate with Salmon, Cheese, and Crackers. ( Self selected from the deli)

The arrival process back in Los Angeles was just as easy and a driver was waiting to take us home. Virgin Atlantic Upper Class isn't cheap, but it's certainly worth it.

2016 Alaskan Cruise- Victoria B.C.

Our final port of call was the island of Victoria in the Canadian province of British Columbia. Victoria is one of the oldest cities in the Pacific North West and it's located very close to both Vancouver and Seattle.

We pulled into port around 5pm on Saturday evening and left at 11pm. It was a short visit, but it gave us just enough time to get a taste of the city; enough of a taste to know that we want to return.

Here are pictures that we took near the port.

A charming touch, for a very charming city: We were greeted by locals in historical costumes who helped give us directions into town.

Rather than taking a taxi, we opted to walk. We saw Canadian Geese. I adore Canadian Geese!

Dan loves his rum cocktails, and by that I mean he likes to mix Kraken rum + Malibu Rum + any other type of rum that's handy. "Release the Kraken" is the party phrase at our house. In Victoria, we found a Kraken themed food truck.

Our half-hour walk to downtown took us along the coast and right through residential neighborhoods. The homes were a mix of victorian era and modern, all with pretty gardens. We enjoyed our walk, but based on the short amount of time that we had in port, we wish we had taken a taxi.

We got a kick out of this funny sign outside of a local dentist office.

This car has a rat problem.

This is how we knew that we had reached the city center.

The British Columbia Parliament Building is grand.

It's even grander at night.

The B.C. Parliament Building has the Confederation Garden Court with a beautiful fountain and shields from the provinces.

Another grand building is the Fairmont Empress Hotel. Our cruise offered an optional excursion to have a victorian cream tea at the Fairmont Empress Hotel, and like the B.C. Parliament Building, the Fairmont Empress Hotel is lit up at night. It was magical, like walking through Disneyland's Main Street at night.

Explorer Captain James Cook discovered Victoria Harbor in 1778 and there is a statue dedicated to him.

Downtown reminded me of walking through a posh part of London. It was filled with trendy shops and restaurants. We saw Munro's Books, which was founded by award-winning novelist, Alice Munro, and her first husband. She no longer has an association with the store, but still seeing it was very cool! I think owning a bookstore would be a dream for most book lovers. I certainly is one of mine.

Downtown was absolutely packed with locals out on a Saturday night and tourists from the ships. We were hungry and desperate to find a restaurant (without a long wait) for dinner. If you're planning a trip to Victoria, I'd recommend doing some research and making a plan. I felt overwhelmed with options.

We ending up having dinner at a vegetarian restaurant named Rbar. By grabbing the last two seats at the bar, we avoided a long wait. We drank yummy cider from local company Left Field Cider Co. and ordered a few appetizers. The restaurant was trendy with tasty food, but also pricy. We left feeling like we needed another meal.

The Crispy Fish is the best food truck we've ever found. Excellent fish n' chips and the two guys that own the truck were super nice.  Fingers crossed that The Crispy Fish will be parked in Victoria for our upcoming trip. For dessert, we had mini-donuts. It was perfect.

You know you're in Canada when...

Rather than walking back to our ship, we hired a horse-drawn carriage. A romantic end to our cruise vacation.

2016 Alaskan Cruise- Ketchikan

Ketchikan was our last port in Alaska and the most rushed. We had about five hours to explore the town and go on our pre-booked excursion. It was another early start; so early that we opted to eat breakfast in town, rather than on the ship. We wanted to maximize our time in Ketchikan.

Here are some snaps as we explored "The Salmon Capital of the World."

One of the most popular Ketchikan attraction is the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show. We were not able to do it in 2016, but we booked it for our upcoming 2017 trip with the kids. We could hear the cheering from the show and it sounded like a lot of fun. I can't wait for some log rolling action!

Just as the rain was staring to pour, we ducked into the Alaska Fish House. I know it sounds weird to have breakfast at a fish place, but pretty much everywhere in Alaska is a "fish place." I highly recommend the Alaska Fish House for breakfast. It's cute, cozy, and serves hearty oatmeal. Plus, it has beautiful views of the marina.

We caught up on the local news and considered adopting some dead pets.

After breakfast, it was time for our Ketchikan excursion: a floatplane ride!

We were taken via shuttle bus to Taquan Air, a private airport just outside of town. After a short briefing on floatplane safety, we met our captain and he took us to the dock. Our plane held five people, so we paired with another couple. Our plane was a DeHavilland Beaver, last produced in the late 60's and our captain was a retired Airforce pilot. Air time was approximately ninety-minutes, as we flew over the Misty Fjords National Monument. Lucky for us, the rain was slowing down, leaving mist, but providing mostly clear views during our excursion.

Half-way through our trip. our pilot landed our plane on a bay and we were able to walk on the wing to take pictures. The water was absolutely crystal clear. I'm a bit of a klutz and although it was amazing to stand on the wing, I was paranoid about falling into the icy water. Luckily, no mishaps!

When we returned to the airport, we were given a certificate to note our excursion.

This was definitely the highlight of our cruise. I would highly recommend the Misty Fjords by Floatplane excursion to those visiting Ketchikan. It was spectacular and worth the price-tag. I would also recommend that you book directly through your cruise line. We were late getting back to the ship, but because we had booked directly through Holland America, they held the ship for us. We probably could have saved money booking on our own, but we would have missed our ship and had a vacation disaster!
