Mount St. Helens

In the first few months that we lived in Oregon, we were very excited about exploring the area, including making a day trip to Washington to see Mount St. Helens National Park. It was only a few hours drive from our apartment. Being from California, where everything is pretty much open year round, it didn't even occur to us that the park might be closed. We were able to see the visitors center, but the actual park was closed for the season, which is approximately October-April.

On a sunny day in May 2017, we put on shorts and drove back to see the volcano.

When the weather turns sunny, the Pacific Northwest is absolutely gorgeous. Here are a few pictures from our drive: sparkling blue rivers and lush green mountainsides.

We brake for Bigfoot!

Our Bigfoot spotting/photo op was at the Volcano Country souvenir shop, where we talked ourselves out of buying all manner of Mount St. Helen's tourist crap.

Tourist trap aside, this is a place you should stop because there is something else very cool to see. They have an A-Frame cabin that was partially covered during the 1980 eruption. No one was hurt in this cabin, as it was still under construction during the eruption, however it is still unnerving to see, especially since this is a fair distance from the volcano. It shows how far the reach of the devastation extended.

We had to stop and take more pictures at the official "Welcome sign." It's a great spot with a snow covered Mount St. Helen's clearly visible in the background.

I'm not sure what we thought we were going to do once we got there, but having already visited the visitor's center on our previous attempt, we just parked on got out. The parking lot was jammed with two types of people: people like us and hardcore hikers. If you want to hike, you'll need to purchase a trail pass. We did not come prepared for major physical activity, so we just took a quick, ten minute walk up the trail to take more pictures.

There was snow! You can see by the way I'm dressed, that I wasn't prepared for hiking or for chilly weather. Luckily, I had thought to throw my sneakers in the truck, otherwise I would have really been in trouble.

A few trail information signs. I love the one warning the animals.

On the way down, we stopped at the cutest cafe called The Fire Mountain Grill.

It was warm enough to sit on the back deck, where we had stunning views of the river. Did I mention how beautiful the PNW is when the weather is nice? It's gorgeous and everyone is in a good mood.

The food was amazing. We had BBQ Pulled-Pork sandwiches with homemade slaw and the most incredible locally sourced berry cobbler with homemade vanilla ice cream for dessert.

I'm happy to have seen Mount St. Helens and I'd definitely go back just to eat at The Fire Mountain Grill. We debated taking the kids when they visited us last summer and ultimately decided that the drive was too long for what we saw, that they wouldn't appreciate it enough. We might reconsider when they are a little older or if we could plan more activities around the adventure. I think there must be more to see if we had planned out our trip, rather than going on the spur of the moment.

Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm and Wine Tasting

I'm sure regular readers have noticed, that I'm blogging about events that are over a year old! We are just too busy running around and enjoying life, that these amazing activities that we've done rack up and I don't have a chance to write about them in a timely manner. I actually hope that I'm never current, as it will mean that we have a travel dry-spell. I love blogging about our lives, but documenting is certainly not as important as simply living and enjoying the moment.

Our amazing friends Bill and Melissa took it upon themselves to make sure that we enjoyed local Oregon activities during our year of living in Portland. One of these activities was a trip to Woodburn to the Tulip Festival at the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm. We did a day trip with them last May to see the tulips, eat ice cream, and visit a few of their favorite wineries.

My first tip for visiting the Tulip Festival is to arrive early. Luckily, Melissa and Bill knew this and we avoided long waits. Be there when they open, because it's popular. When we left, just a few hours after they had opened, the line of cars to get into the dirt parking lot was enormous. We probably would have spent more time waiting for parking, than enjoying the flowers.

Before seeing tulips, we saw some old farm equipment.

There are a few rules to keep the flower beds safe and pretty.

When I visited Holland a few years ago, I visited a windmill farm, but it was after tulip season. They only tulips that I saw, were fake ones at the Tulip Museum in Amsterdam. I knew that tulips came in many shapes and colors, but seeing them in person was gorgeous. The entire farm was awash in color.

Another tip: Wear rain boots or shoes with good traction that you don't mind getting dirty. It had rained ( it's Oregon) and the fields were very, very muddy. A lot of people brought their dogs, which were having a great time playing in the mud!

The Tulip Festival had a large craft fair, live entertainment, and food. Of course, there were several tents where you could purchase tulips.

Being Oregon, they had a tent with wine tasting too. No, ten in the morning is not too early for a little taste, not even on an empty stomach.

After getting our fill of flowers, we spent the afternoon visiting local wineries. Oregon has A LOT of wineries. So, so, so many....that even a search for where we might have visited, doesn't leave me with any names that rang a bell. I remember that they were very good and at one, people were throwing a birthday party for their dog on an outside patio. You don't forget things like dogs having a party!

We also didn't take a single picture at the wineries. We did however, take a picture of this amazing ice cream truck that was parked outside of one of the wineries. Ice cream always trumps wine. Cream NorthWest was delicious. I vividly remember the scoop of Coldbrew Coffee & Caramel that I devoured. Yummmm

We had a wonderful day out with friends enjoying local activities. If you're visiting Oregon in the spring make sure to add the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm to your itinerary.

KISS Mini-Golf

A few weeks ago, I spent the afternoon with my friend Catherine in Las Vegas and we checked out the KISS themed mini-golf course at the Rio Hotel.

I'm not a fan of KISS and neither is Cath, but black-light indoor mini-golf sounded liked a lot of fun. Who doesn't like mini-golf?

Monster Mini Golf is the brainchild behind the blacklight mini-golf experience. We found out that they also have a Twilight Zone themed course at Bally's. I'm a huge Twilight Zone fan and had I known that it existed, I would have definitely picked it over a KISS theme. We didn't have a chance to check it out this trip, but Vegas is a short drive away and we will be back! I so hope they have a hole themed to "Talky Tina."

Cath and I showed up mid-morning, shortly after opening and we found it to be very quiet. We commented that it was like being the first people to show up at a night-club. Usually, it's a great thing when a mini-golf course isn't crowded, but the KISS course is an exception. This is a place that is mean't to have a party atmosphere. They have a KISS themed bar, gift shop, and mini museum right next the golf course, so the area can presumably be filled with many people, even those not playing golf.

A staff member told us that they would play any KISS song that we requested. There is a DJ booth in the middle of the course and staff kept running to the booth to make announcements, trying to bolster the atmosphere. Everyone who worked at KISS mini-golf was welcoming and exuding enthusiasm. They were on the course, making sure that everyone was having a great time.

The course is highly themed and quite difficult with challenging obstacles. No "holes in ones" for us. Even though we were not KISS fans, we still enjoyed the music ( Hey, the sang that???) and had fun. We were having so much fun and chatting, that I didn't take many pictures.

The course could definitely be a trip hazard if people have been drinking at the bar, prior to playing. We had some near misses and we were sober. Sensible shoes are a good idea, heeled sandals not so much.

There is only one course and it took us about an hour. We did catch up to the family in front of us and had to wait. We paid twelve-dollars each for a round, but I've since seen that you can get deals through Groupon.

After playing, we checked out the gift shop and small KISS museum. They even do weddings and had a whole section of KISS themed wedding merchandise.

The best thing was on our way out: The KISS car with the warning sign not to sit on the tongue. Not something that you see everyday!

IMG_20180409_121615.jpg

Overall it was a fun experience, certainly a must-do for KISS fans.
