England 2016 - Aldworth Giants and the Downs

For years, Dan has been telling me about giants that are buried in a church in Aldworth, a village near his hometown of Newbury.  I hear giants, I think Jack and the Bean Stock or Game of Thrones... gotta see the giants! After doing some research, I learned that the "giants" are medieval knights, who are said to have been over seven-feet tall. While not exactly giant, that is very tall, especially for the time period. If I saw a person over seven-feet tall today, I'd still do a double-take.

St. Mary's is a beautiful church in the countryside and while we didn't get to see the graves of the giants, which were located inside of the locked church, we were able to walk the grounds.

After visiting Aldworth, we headed to the nearby downs. The downs is an expansive hilly grass area used to exercise race horses. Horse racing and training are big in this region of England. Growing up, Dan used to be an avid equestrian and he would ride on the downs. Unfortunately, we didn't have any horses with us, but it was still a gorgeous place to take a leisurely walk.

It was hot, humid, and we didn't encounter a single person or car during our three hour walk. We did encounter this ominous barrier that reminded us of The Walking Dead. We dared to walk around it!

With so many sights to see in England, a walk in the countryside isn't likely to be included on a tourist's itinerary, but if you get the chance, it's a lovely way to spend an afternoon!
