Summer 2018: Las Vegas with Kids- Red Rocks Canyon, Cancun Resort, and Yummy Food

Our 2018 “staycation” continued with a three-night trip to Las Vegas. We have been to Vegas so many times, that it almost seems like a second home. Although Vegas is certainly an adult holiday destination, it can also be a great place for a family vacation. We’ve taken my step-kids many times and they love it. On this trip, my step-daughter had just turned eleven and my step-son was nearly nine.

Of course, a Las Vegas trip with kids does not mean casinos, booze, and clubs ( honestly, clubs haven’t been part of my Vegas vacations since my 20’s), however, it doesmeans plenty of pool time, attractions, and creative food.

We’ve stayed at nearly every hotel on the strip and although we would have loved to stay at the Waldorf Astoria, a kid-centric trip gave us a different kind of focus. We picked a “new-to-us” hotel, The Cancun Resort.

IMG_20180814_161342-EFFECTS.jpg

The Cancun Resort is actually a Diamond Timeshare property. We are not timeshare owners and we are not interested in getting free nights for attending a presentation. This said, we have discovered that staying at timeshare properties and just paying for them like a normal hotel room, is a great option. They are usually a good value and the rooms are often apartment style, with a kitchen and laundry. Having these features isn’t as important when we are traveling as a couple, but they make a huge difference when we are on vacation with the kids. The kitchen is especially important, as we save money and have an easy way to cook kid-friendly food.

Now, there is a little juggling when it comes to the timeshare hard-sell. They will try to get you to attend a presentation and they will throw perks at you, such as show tickets or free nights at their other hotels. If you’re interested, go for it. However, if you’re not, you just need to be very clear and firm. They may call your room and present you with the offer multiple times- be firm, they will eventually go away. We didn’t experience too much of a hard-sell at The Cancun Resort, but it does happen at timeshare properties.

Although this was my first time staying at The Cancun Resort, I had visited the property in 2004. My godparent’s stayed here during my first wedding and actually threw a family brunch in their suite. During my first visit, I was very impressed with the pool complex, which is what made me consider it for this vacation.

Pool time was our primary objective.

As with many Vegas hotels, The Cancun Resort has a beautiful lobby and friendly staff, who even allowed us to check-in early.

We stayed in a one bedroom, two full-bath suite with a kitchen and balcony. The kids slept on the pull-out couch in the living room. This situation fit our needs perfectly, providing plenty of space for us to spread out.

And our balcony with a lovely parking lot view. A pool view would have been visually nicer, but admittedly the parking lot was mostly quiet. I always use the hotel balconies for a quiet place to read.

The room was a little shabby and in need of a remodel, but it met our basic needs and was not so terrible, that we wouldn’t return.

Besides…

The pool was fabulous. It had multiple slides and was enormous, plenty of space for everyone, even on a busy summer day. We never had trouble finding lounge chairs- which is a big deal. On a previous trip, we stayed at the MGM Grand and the pool scene was a nightmare; completely over-crowded with no spare lounge chairs to be found. The pool complex at The Cancun Resort has a nice layout and is spacious.

The kids loved the pool, but the resort also caters to adults with delicious tropical cocktails served in hollowed out pineapples and an adult-only area with hammocks!!!

Unlike the bigger hotels that have difficult parking situations, it was easy to grab our car from the lot and head out to explore Vegas. We took the kids to Red Rock Canyon, where we had a geology lesson and saw native tortoises.

We hit the strip for a visit to The World of Coke, Hershey store, and people watching.

Next to swimming, eating is always a top Vegas activity. On this trip, we went to Egg Works, which has become my favorite breakfast spot. The Greek scramble (half-size is enough, trust me) is a must and make sure to try their homemade banana nut muffins. The even made Mickey Mouse-esque pancakes for the kids!

At Creamberry, we joined a long queue to experience their instagram famous “Ice Cream Burrito.”

MVIMG_20180816_203925.jpg

Check out their brag-board..

MVIMG_20180816_203859.jpg

This monster of a dessert included multiple scoops of ice cream and toppings (of your choice) wrapped -up like a burrito in cotton candy.

It was a little sickly, but definitely worth the experience. One burrito was plenty to share among the four of us.

Creamberry is also known for other tempting treats; such as shaping ice cream into roses and fun cookie creations.

We loved Creamberry so much, that we returned the next day. The kids got normal scoops of ice cream and the adults had Italian affogatos: espresso poured over ice cream and topped with whipped cream. I discovered affogatos a few years ago and they might be my favorite coffee treat. I’m thinking a splash of Bailey’s might up the affogato experience. Thoughts?

The other somewhat strange thing that we discovered on this vacation, is how much the kids love to look at model homes. At the time, we were considering buying property in Vegas and looking at different communities was really fun. I think we were all dreaming of having a private pool. The kids actually requested to go look at model homes, rather than having pool time at the hotel. My mind was blown. In the end, we moved to Colorado, but it was a lot of fun looking at the options in Vegas. Lake Las Vegas in particular, is a beautiful community.

Criss Angel's MindFreak Live

IMG_1616.JPG

This is a long over-due review of magician Criss Angel’s show Mindfreak Live, which previously had a long-running engagement at Luxor in Las Vegas ( where we saw it), but has since moved to the Planet Hollywood Hotel. It is advertised as being a new show at Planet Hollywood, but I can’t imagine that Angel has changed some of his signature acts, such as flying in the air, and I’m sure the show still takes on a similar tone of being at a rock concert.

My husband and I had seen Angel’s previous Luxor show, Believe, in which he had created in partnership with Cirque Du Soleil. It was incredible. Angel is a very talented performer. What impressed us the most, was his high energy and gratefulness towards the audience. Even though he has been performing for decades, you still get the feeling that he loves his job and not only that, but he wants to put on the best possible show every night. We saw David Copperfield’s show at the MGM Grand and we were left disappointed at Copperfield’s lack of enthusiasm and rude behavior towards audience volunteers. Admittedly, Copperfield could have had an off-night, but it was such a left-down, that we would never pay to see him again. Two shows in and we would definitely pay to see Angel for a third time!

We took the kids to see Mindfreak Live. At the time, my step-daughter had just turned ten and my step-son was nearly eight. Parts of Mindfreak Live ( sawing a lady in half with spurting fake blood, Angel swallowing razor blades) were just creepy enough to have them squeal and bury their heads into our shoulders. Angel has a semi-devilish persona that he really plays up. It is all done in good fun and the kids were old enough to understand that it is all just an illusion. There were plenty of kids in the audience.

Speaking of kids, Angel has founded a pediatric cancer charity called Heal Every Life Possible (H.E.L.P.). During a very emotional act in his show, Angel opens up about his young son’s battle with Leukemia. He then segues into his flying act, which is nothing less than astonishing. Even knowing that it is an illusion, it is mind boggling. He soars around hoops that are suspended and gracefully “walks” in the air. The dazzle of this act combined with his emotional situation actually made me cry. I surprised myself to be overcome with emotion during the show, but I don’t think that I was the only one in the audience with tears.

We had no idea in advance, but we visited on a very special day. Earlier on the same morning, Angel had been in Los Angeles to accept his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. After Mindfreak Live ended, Angel came back on the stage with his theater family to reveal this news and Luxor presented him with a cake. In the lobby, the audience was treated to Criss Angel Walk of Fame cupcakes as we exited!

IMG_5370.JPG

As I previously mentioned. Angel gave 110% during his show. As he thanked the audience and his team for their support and spoke about the honor of receiving a star, he mentioned that he had not had much sleep in the last few days. He was utterly exhausted, running on empty. Yet, as an audience member, we would never have known. Angel is a true professional and fabulous performer.

Summer 2016- Luxor

On the way to our Disney World vacation, we made a two-night stop in Las Vegas. It was so much fun, that we decided to add two more nights on the way back from Orlando. This was my first time staying at Luxor. I have to confess, that I've never been a fan of Luxor. I'm not a huge gambler, but what little I've played at Luxor, has been a straight losing streak. I also don't think much of their dining options. However, the price was right, and it seemed like a cool hotel to take the kids. I mean, who wouldn't want to sleep in a giant pyramid? The Sphinx at the entrance makes a huge impression.

The theming was a hit with the kids. They were wide-eyed as we arrived and awe-struck for the entire stay. I've stayed at a majority of the hotel in Vegas, and although Luxor isn't the fanciest, it's a hotel that I'd consider for future visits.

We had a standard room for the first visit, but on the way back we were upgraded to a room with a jacuzzi tub. Zoe and Felix loved the massive tub. It's like a private swimming pool, especially for small kids! Our room had a sitting area that was off to the side, not quite a separate room, but it was designed in a way that gave us plenty of extra space. Here are pictures of the second, larger room.

Since this was a vacation with the kids, we did zero gambling. It was fairly easy to navigate the family friendly areas of Luxor and avoid the casino. The food options were somewhat limited. We ate over-priced pizza in the food court and even more shockingly over-priced snacks at Starbucks. The prices at the Starbucks in the Vegas casinos is far higher than regular Starbucks. Every Vegas trip, we can't believe the Starbucks sticker-shock. The kids liked the buffet at Luxor, where we dined twice. This is probably my least favorite buffet in Vegas, but it had kid friendly items. It's always easiest when the whole family can pick exactly what they want to eat. No food drama.

Here are pictures of the hotel, including the lobby area. I should also mention that due to the shape of the hotel, the elevators move slightly sideways. It's a strange sensation, that was also a huge hit with the kids.

Above all, our primary reason for visiting Vegas was to have some pool time.

The pool at Luxor isn't the best in Vegas, but it's very good. It's missing a lazy river: which is the mark of a superior pool experience. What really made our pool time special, is we splurged on a cabana.

To make the most of our cabana time, we arrived when the pool opened and stayed until closing. We would never have been able to spend so much time outside in the summer heat without a cabana. We relied on having our private spot of shade with misters to keep us cool and sunburn free.

The Luxor cabanas come with four lounge chairs and a large sofa. They have storage lockers, a stocked refrigerator, and a television. We were given a small basket with snacks, like cookies and chips, but we definitely ordered plenty of food and drinks too.

The cabana rental came with a semi-private pool: a pool dedicated just to people renting cabanas. There were several other families renting cabana's and the experience on both days of our rental, were completely family friendly. We were even given access to pool toys and the grass area behind the cabanas had a giant Jenga and corn-hole set. Unlike the main pool, the cabana pool wasn't crowded at all.

Compare the cabana pool crowds to a walk-way to the main pool. The cabana certainly wasn't inexpensive, but it was a great experience.

Hands down, the best part of our cabana experience was our cabana attendant: Gina. Our family loved Gina. We loved her so much, that when we returned from Orlando, we switched to a less desirable cabana location, just to be in Gina's section. She was the best.

Definitely splurge on the cabana: it's worth every penny. Make sure to insist on Gina's section! Here are a few final pictures of Luxor as viewed from the pool complex. Luxor isn't the most luxurious hotel in Vegas, but it's certainly a solid mid-range hotel with a fun theme. It's perfect for a family trip.
