Our Anniversary at the Denver Zoo

We celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary in early November. Usually we celebrate with a small trip, but this year we needed to be both budget and covid conscious, so we decided to spend the day at The Denver Zoo. We love animals, and although we have lived in Colorado for nearly a year, this was our first time at the zoo.

Due to Covid, we had to purchase advanced tickets with a timed entry. We went at 10am ( zoo opening) on a Monday morning. When we arrived, we were among only a handful of cars in the parking lot. It was a ghost town.

We arrived about thirty minutes early, so we just enjoyed the crisp morning air and the exhibits at the zoo entrance. I really love the alligator sculpture.

Masks were mandatory and social distancing reminders were everywhere. The zoo also had one-way traffic, so we had to complete a big circle. Since it was our first visit, this worked well and we really didn’t notice a problem with other visitors bunching up at the same exhibits. It was very easy to social distance. The only problem with the one-way traffic is there were a few areas where we had to choose a path, so we know that we missed a few animals, including our favorite, the capybara. The loop took us about three hours at a leisurely pace.

During the spring, when the zoo was shut-down due to Covid, local artists came to paint and beautify the zoo.

I also learned that The Denver Zoo is historic for its use of naturalistic habitats back in 1918. Having worked with behavioral research at The Greater Los Angeles Zoo, I could really appreciate the significance and importance of “Bear Mountain.”

One of the highlights of our visit was seeing the baby rhino cuddling with its mother.

The other big surprise was seeing a herd of elephants crossing a bridge above us. We just caught them at the right moment and it was magical.

The most entertaining and loudest animals were the seal lions. Seal Lions are the clowns of the zoo world.

We took a break at Gidget’s Ice Cream Parlor where I was delighted to discover that they sold Dole Whip. I absolutely love Dole Whip, but I’ve never eaten it outside of a Disney park or the Dole Plantation in Oahu. It has been years since I have eaten this creamy pineapple treat and I was in heaven.

Continuing our day, we came across “Bird World” which I assume is an indoor aviary. It was closed due to Covid, but I had to snap a picture, as it looked like it was straight out of Jurassic Park.

IMG_2330.jpg

The reptile house/aquarium building was open. It was themed to feel like a tropical forest. It also had a cool bat exhibit.

IMG_1667.jpg

We saw so many animals, and since we visited in the morning on a quiet day, a majority of them were very active. It was the perfect zoo experience.

The Denver Zoo is filled with cute animal sculptures made from lego bricks. The park was also still decorated for Halloween, which had just happened a few days earlier. They were starting the transition from Halloween to Christmas decorations.

Visiting The Denver Zoo was the ideal way to spend our anniversary. I wish the zoo was closer to our house, so that we could justify getting year passes. I would also love to work at a zoo again. I miss it!

Summer 2018: La Quinta Resort and Club

When my step-kids visited us for the summer in 2018, we did a series of mini “staycations.” We visited Knott’s Berry Farm, Las Vegas, and Palm Springs. To many this may seem strange, since we were full-time residents in Big Bear Lake, California: a resort town, which draws thousands of tourist in the summer, but we just needed to escape from our own vacation paradise.

We are frequent visitors to the La Quinta Resort and Club in Palm Desert. Click here to check out my previous review.

The resort is located in a cove and surrounded by mountains, providing a stunning experience at both sunrise and sunset. The colors on the mountains are magnificent. The hotel is a historic landmark, built in the 1920’s and although it has expanded over the years, it still retains its Spanish-style architecture with charming decorative tiles. The resort was a favorite of golden era Hollywood celebrities, including Clark Gable, Greta Garbo, and Frank Capra. There are many nods to these celebrities on property; for example, on our first visit, we swam in the Ginger Rogers pool! Speaking of pools, the resort has 41 pools!!!

Although we’ve stayed dozens of times, this trip was special because we decided to upgrade to a suite with a private pool and spa. We stayed in the 1400 square foot King Pueblo Suite. Although technically only one bedroom, the suite has an enormous living room with a convertible sofa for the kids. The King Pueblo Suite was ideal for our family, but would also be a romantic getaway space for a couple.

Even though it can only sleep about four people, it had a kitchen and a dining table for eight. If you’re traveling with extended family or friends, you could rent this room for the private pool and have the other members of your party book standard rooms, using the King Pueblo Suite as a base for gathering.

Here are interior pictures of the King Pueblo Suite-

One of the best features is the long fireplace that can be enjoyed either from the master bath or master bedroom. I could take a bath in the soaking tub and see my husband lying in bed, both of us enjoying the fireplace!

The room was very luxurious, but the best feature was the backyard. When we travel with the kids, pools are a big part of our vacations, but this was the first time that we had experienced our own, private pool.

Several years ago, I posted a tweet about how I had lost a bunch of weight and bought a new dress at Nordstrom to celebrate. Nordstrom saw the tweet and their marketing department sent me a gift package for summer that included a giant donut pool float. We were finally able to use the donut float! We also purchased a giant flamingo float and two smaller floats for this trip. I used to work on a flamingo project at The Greater Los Angeles Zoo and I am forevermore associated with the birds.

We pretty much didn’t leave our private pool for two days. Dan took this picture of me when I fell asleep reading magazines. I had gone inside to take a break from the sun and just couldn’t keep my eyes open. Vacation naps are the best!

20180806_161947.jpg

No matter what room you stay in, the La Quinta Resort and Club is fabulous, but if you can swing it, the King Pueblo Suite will make your vacation extra special. I think this is especially true, if you don’t have a pool in your home. For a few years, we thought that we would end up living in an area where we would have our own pool, but we have recently purchased a home in Colorado and the private pool dream has vanished.

Just a few more pictures of the resort. I wish I could magically transport myself to the La Quinta Resort and Club, hop in a pool, and feel the hot, desert air, rather than deal with winter weather in Colorado!

Summer 2016: WDW with Kids- Disney's Animal Kingdom

Disney's Animal Kingdom is both my all-time favorite theme park and favorite zoological park. Disney is known for incredible theming and there is no better themed park than Disney's Animal Kingdom. It's gorgeous and immersive, with no detail overlooked.

We spent two days at Disney's Animal Kingdom. I always could spend more time and on previous trips with friends, I left the group to spend days at Animal Kingdom on my own. I love it so much. Two days was enough for this trip though. Compared to the other parks, there are less attractions and frankly, the kids don't have a huge interest in seeing the animals.

Here is our family picture in front of the iconic Tree of Life. This is a photo pass picture and Tinkerbell was added in. I like Tinkerbell, but she doesn't belong at Animal Kingdom. If they have to add a "magical touch" why not something more appropriate? Zazu maybe? It ruins the picture, but this is the best group.

AK_BRDGTOP_20160801_7760822705.jpeg

The trunk of the Tree of Life is filled with animal sculptures. My favorite is the one of David Gray Beard: primatologist Jane Goodall's favorite chimpanzee. The Tree of Life is truly stunning and worth exploring. The tree also houses the attraction, It's Tough to Be a Bug. This is a 4-D show featuring characters from A Bug's Life. It's a cute show with some uncomfortable effects, but worth seeing, if you haven't done it. We have the attraction in California, so we decided that it could be skipped.

First stop, Africa for the Kilimanjaro Safaris and Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail.

We had a fast pass for Kilimanjaro Safaris, an open-air vehicle ride to see African animals in a setting to make it look as if they are roaming free on the savannah. Animals include lions, elephants, zebras, crocodiles, flamingos, and giraffe. This family-friendly attraction is definitely one of the most popular rides at Disney's Animal Kingdom. It shouldn't be missed and since it features real animals, no two rides are ever the same. One time, an Ostrich sat in front of the vehicle and we got stuck for about ten minutes.

The Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail is a walk-through exhibit featuring more African animals: Meerkats, Western Lowland Gorillas, Grevy's Zebras, Naked Mole Rats, and more. I could spend all day just watching the animals on the exploration trails. One of my favorite WDW memories was arriving before park opening for a behind the scenes tour and I was allowed to wait on The Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. I was alone with the zoo keepers and got to watch them feed the hippos. The hippos were extremely active and playful, including a baby. I spent many years volunteering at The Greater Los Angeles Zoo ( both as a high student and eventually as an adult in the behavioral research department) and I can tell you, that the best time to visit a zoological park is early in the morning or at closing. The animals are most active, especially if they are excited for food or enrichment items. In California rainy days are great, because it's somewhat of a novelty for the animals.

We breezed through all of the animal trails. It was not nearly enough time for me, but I've visited Disney's Animal Kingdom many times. We wanted the kids to have the best time ever, so we let them guide how much time was spent on the trails.

Expedition Everest is my favorite Disney coaster. It has the best themed queue, it's truly thrilling, and it features a Yeti. Felix handled it okay compared to other thrill rides and Zoe loved it. I'd have to ask her again, but I'm fairly certain that it was her absolute favorite ride of the trip. We went on it twice, once with a Fast Pass and once without.

I took plenty of pictures of the queue, which includes a "Yeti Museum" and interactive posters elements.

Kali River Rapids is a rafting adventure ride with an ecological theme. You usually or I should say, I usually, get drenched. It's a really fun, but rather short ride, that I often avoid because of the getting drenched bit. We did it with the kids, loved it and of course, got drenched. Here are pictures of the queue, which is also very themed.

Asia has an animal trail, the Maharajah Jungle Trek, featuring Tigers, Gibbons, Komodo Dragon, and the single best thing at ANY Disney park = Malayan Flying Fox aka Giant Fruit Bats! They are fantastic. I could watch them all day long. We definitely visited them, as I would not visit Disney's Animal Kingdom without a stop to see them, but we didn't take any pictures.

From living animals to extinct animals, next we visited DinoLand U.S.A.. We spent the most amount of time in the parking-lot carnival themed area of Chester & Hester Dino-Rama. We used a Fast Pass for Primeval Whirl, a mouse-type rollercoaster that spins. The kids loved it and I have to say that it's much more comfortable to ride this sitting next to a kid, rather than another adult. We also did the Triceratop Spin, where you sit in baby triceratops and you can control the up/down, while it circles.

DinoLand's big dark ride, Dinosaur, was down for refurbishment, so we missed it. I think it's okay though, because it might have been a little too intense for the kids. I always still have a freaked out look in the ride photos, which are taken at the scariest part of the ride.

There were a few other things we missed. I really wish we had done Finding Nemo:The Musical, which is the best Disney stage show in any park. I really enjoy Conservation Station, which is a great place to take kids who are interested in a veterinary career. They have an area where you can watch vets working (if a procedure is scheduled) and there are animal care experts on hand to answer questions. They also have a petting zoo and you get to take a fun train ride to reach Conservation Station, taking you past the off-view animal enclosures.

Pandora: The World of Avatar was still under construction. I'm not at all a fan of Avatar, but I'm sure that the attractions and land look amazing. I'm looking forward to seeing it on our next trip. They had not started running the Animal Kingdom at Night or the new night show, Rivers of Light, so those are other things to look forward to seeing on our next vacation.

Other than snacks, we didn't dine at Disney's Animal Kingdom, but from previous trips, I highly recommend Yak and Yeti. Make sure to save room for the pineapple wonton dessert. Yummy!
