Bonaventure Hotel- October 2018

In October 2018, I was able to join Dan on his work trip to Los Angeles. This was a bit strange thing, since for thirty-nine years, I lived just ten minutes from downtown. It was bittersweet to visit my hometown and to know that I’m just a tourist.

We stayed at the iconic Westin Bonaventure hotel.

Built in the late 70’s, the Westin Bonaventure is a Los Angeles landmark. It has been featured in dozens of movies, such as True Lies and Logan’s Run. Also used as a location for television series, music videos, and even video games.

The first time I visited the Westin Bonaventure, was in the early 90’s, when I begged my mom to take me to a John Robert Powers talent scouting event. I wasn’t particularly interested in being scouted, although I did wear my very trendy “Hyper-Color” tee-shirt. I was more interested in the celebrities in attendance, including up-and-coming actor, Brian Austin Green from Beverly Hills 90210.

The atrium style lobby was packed and a cat walk had been erected in the middle of the room. Here are pictures of how it looks today…imagine hundreds of screaming pre-teens and the smell of Aquanet.

Flash-forward to my early twenties, when the height of sophistication was going out for drinks at the Bonavista Revolving Cocktail Lounge with my impossibly handsome friend, Luke. The Bonavista offers stunning views of downtown Los Angeles as it slowly turns. We were always the youngest people in the lounge, which was decorated in 1980’s chic. To be fair, this was usually our first stop, prior to hitting more age-appropriate night spots on the sunset strip, always ending with a 4am, drunken breakfast at The Standard.

I insisted that Dan experience the Bonavista. Sometimes, it is better to leave the past in the past. The lounge was absolutely dead, the decor dated, and not in a cool, retro way. We had overpriced drinks, took a few pictures, and got out. The views are still breathtaking, but the lounge is in desperate need of a refresh.

Our rooms at the Westin Bonaventure were small, but comfortable. The had a lot of the amenities that Westin is know for, including a lavender sleep spray. We even had the option of borrowing a set of gym clothes, in case we hadn’t thought to pack our own, and wanted a work-out. We had a view of the downtown library.

The Westin Bonaventure isn’t a beautiful building. It’s concrete and cold, certainly a vision of the future circa the 1970’s. It’s also huge, with three towers and a mall inside of the hotel. The mall, mostly small stores and food court style restaurants, was actually great for quick, inexpensive meals, especially since we stayed at the hotel for five nights. I appreciated having close options that were more affordable than the typical hotel restaurants.

I loved the hotel maps. These clearly were the inspiration for the Dharma Initiative on Lost.

The pool is located on a large patio, on a high floor; not a rooftop pool, but high enough that you feel like you’re floating in the middle of the skyscrapers. The view is quite spectacular. Unfortunately, the pool itself was too cold to enjoy, but we did spend time soaking in the downtown ambiance. It’s magical at night.

The Westin Bonaventure is an icon that should be considered for your next trip to Los Angeles. It’s located in the heart of downtown, just a short walk to many tourist attractions. I spent five days in the city and walked everywhere, while Dan attended a conference. I always felt safe and never lacked for entertainment. Although I lived so close to downtown for decades, this was my first time experiencing many of its famous sites. I would encourage locals to book a staycation and check out all of the wonderful things that downtown Los Angeles has to offer.

Hotel Review- Trump International Las Vegas

It's no secret, I love Las Vegas. Dan and I travel there several times a year and one of my favorite things is trying different hotels. A few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of staying in a Penthouse Suite at the Trump International.

Since we were traveling with Dan's parents, we decided to go all out and we made arrangements through the concierge at Trump to have a limo pick us up at McCarran International Airport. There is no better way to start the weekend than with a bottle of champagne.

The limo was complete with twinkling 80's prom lights, rap videos blaring on the TV and a snazzy bar. Dan, the family photographer, spent the short trip taking pictures of the strip.

As soon as we entered the Trump International , we were treated with exceptional customer service. This was consistent for the entire stay and it is one of my biggest impressions of the property. As we waited for Dan to handle the check-in, an employee approached us to see if we would like a bottle of water or if we needed anything else. The bell service brought our luggage to our room within five minutes of our arrival, without us having to call down first. This is not a small property, but it has a very intimate and personal feel.

I've been fortunate to stay in many amazing hotel rooms, especially in Las Vegas, but none have been more impressive than the Penthouse Suite at the Trump International.

I'm going to start with a teaser and show you the view from our room. We were told by multiple employees that our room has one of the best views in the entire hotel. It was definitely the best view that I've ever had of the strip. Simply stunning.

Our suite was absolutely massive. We entered to find a long hallway with console table stacked with art books. The entry hall included a huge guest bathroom.

I spent many hours cuddled on the couch reading a novel. In my mind, one of the keys to making a great hotel room is having a good reading spot. Trump International not only had a comfy couch, but our bedroom had two plush lounge chairs.

Our suite had two bedrooms, on opposite sides of the living room, each with their own private bathroom. Since Dan's parents don't take baths, we took the master suite that had the deepest tub that I've ever had the pleasure of bathing in. I felt like I could go for a swim in it.

Both bedrooms were beautifully appointed and had the same amazing view of Las Vegas Blvd that we had from the living room.

In the master suite, we had a huge walk-in closet. What's more, this was not the only closet! There were two additional full length closets adjacent to the walk-in. This is excessive for the weekend, but it would be great if you bought one of the rooms for an apartment. The Trump International is not just a hotel, it is also a residence. I think this must be why the property had such a quiet and personal vibe.

What you can't see in this picture, is when you walk inside of the closet, the left has another rack/shelf and the right has a giant dresser.

The bathroom was enormous and filled with many amenities that are not standard in most hotels, like a dental kit and fancy bath salts. The shower was big enough to hold a whole family and had two shower heads with great water pressure. The bathroom didn't just have a television, but it had a television mounted inside of the mirror. Cool!

When I wasn't reading on the couch, I was parked in the bathtub. My perfect Vegas vacation! The only negative about the bathroom was it didn't have a make-up mirror. I'm positive that if I had called down to the front desk, one would have been brought to our room. I'm so used to seeing them standard in the hotels, even ones not anywhere as close to as nice as this one, that I was surprised.

Our suite came with a full kitchen that was loaded with everything necessary to make a meal.

P1000568.JPG

Since we were on vacation, we didn't use the kitchen to make anything other than tea and coffee, which was included. Also included, were several free bottles of water. This to me was a huge perk. It's something that I've never seen in another hotel and really, it's a small way to make the guests really happy. Every hotel should do this. I was just disappointed that it wasn't labeled Trump Ice. I watched the show! C'mon!

We ordered room service for three of our meals and with our late night dinner on Friday night, we were given a complimentary bottle of wine and cheese plate. Another nice perk.

The room service food was delicious. We had a very nervous attendant on the first evening, who forgot one of the entrees and didn't open the wine, but he was really nice, very young and the situation was fixed. No problem. This may sound silly and too simple, but you can't wrong with the cheeseburger. It hit the spot when we arrived for our weekend. On the last night, I had an tender pot roast with tons of roasted vegetables. It was really good food that kept us ordering from room service rather than finding a restaurant.

Even though our trip was in January, we lucked out and experienced unseasonably warm weather. Warm enough to use the pool. The pool area was lovely and filled with many circular lounge beds for two.

In additional to the gorgeous property and wonderful staff, the hotel wins with it's proximity. It is located directly across the street from the Fashion Show Mall, with an easy entrance through Nordstrom. It is a minute walk across a not-so busy street. The hotel also offers a free shuttle to  Wynn and Caesar's Palace. Although Trump International does not have a casino (a plus in my opinion), you are never far from the action. It's a great escape from the bustle of the hotels on the strip.

Trump International is now on the top of my list for favorite Vegas hotels. I'm looking forward to many return trips.

UK August -October 2013- Premiere Inn Blackpool

You really should steer clear of Blackpool. It was the worst place that we visited on our UK trip. More on the town of Blackpool coming up, this review is for the hotel where we stayed during our night-stop.

Premiere Inn-Blackpool

Premiere Inn-Blackpool

Premiere Inn is a UK hotel chain that is on par with America's Motel Six brand. They are cheap and everywhere! We found availability at a Premiere Inn located adjacent to the airport and just a short walk from the tourist attractions in Blackpool. The walkability factor was a huge reason that we picked this particular hotel. The location was also desirable, because although it was close to the attractions, it wasn't right in the thick of things. It felt safer and cleaner.

We were given the last room available, a handicap accessible room on the first floor. The only thing that stood out about it being handicap accessible, was the larger bathroom and emergency cord. Otherwise, it looked like a standard room.

It's no frills, but I started out impressed with Premiere Inn.

The front desk clerk was nice, the room seem clean, it was fairly tastefully decorated (I like purple), they gave us thirty minutes free wi-fi.... actually, the free wi-fi won me over, because many of the places we stayed charged an absorbanent amount for wi-fi, so a free half hour made me happy. It was enough time to check my email and Facebook.

My impression of Premiere Inn changed when it was time for bed.

It was the worst night of sleep that I have ever had in a hotel. The mattress was fine, but the linens made my skin itch. I think that I may have been allergic to the detergent that they use, because my skin broke out into a rash and I couldn't stop scratching. It was miserable. It was bad enough that I will likely never stay at a Premiere Inn again. I travel frequently and I've never had this experience in any other hotel. It makes my skin crawl just thinking about it!

Stay tuned for our Blackpool Adventure...babies gambling, giant disco balls and the UK's largest water park!
