Florida 2020: Doubletree Beach Resort Tampa Bay

As a birthday surprise, Dan took me on a short trip to Florida. This was especially sweet, since we moved from California to Colorado in 2019, and I’ve missed living near the beach. There is something about the salty air and the sound of the waves that brings an instant calm. Having a few days by the ocean was the best medicine for this tough year.

We stayed at the Doubletree Beach Resort by Hilton in Tampa Bay- North Redington Beach. I’ve traveled to Florida many times, but this was my first visit to the beaches on the Gulf of Mexico. As much as I love the theme parks ( and I really, really do love them,) it was nice to have the opportunity to explore other aspects of Florida.

This was a typical Doubletree hotel, as far as room size and amenities. We were given the customary warmed chocolate chip-walnut cookies upon check-in. The only small changes were due to Covid, such as only taking the elevator with your own group and wearing masks while navigating the property. These were minor inconveniences that made us feel safe while traveling during the pandemic.

One of the funniest pictures was outside of the elevators. Look at those peepers!

Here are some pictures of our room. I appreciated that we had a refrigerator included. We drank gallons of bottled water!

The rooms with king beds were sold-out, but we did have an ocean view balcony. We bought parfaits and ate breakfast on our balcony both mornings.

Forty dollars provided us with a day rental of two cushioned sun loungers and a huge umbrella. This made our day at the beach far more enjoyable, than if we had been on beach towels or had to lug around our own beach chairs. An attendant came around periodically to adjust our umbrellas, and we could come and go as we pleased. As far as Covid, the lounge chairs were spaced apart, making social distancing a breeze. Even though it was mid-August, the beach was not crowded and we never felt like it was an unsafe vacation choice.

This was my first time swimming in the Gulf of Mexico. The water was warm and clear enough to see small fish swimming around our legs. It was truly the perfect beach day and I look forward to coming back with my step-kids in 2021.

When it was time for lunch, we left our belongings on our beach chairs and headed to the outdoor cafe at our hotel. The cafe is just steps from the beach and we snagged a spot where we could keep an eye on our loungers. We didn’t use it, but the hotel pool is also adjacent to the cafe.

Lunch was fantastic. We shared a croissant club sandwich, a heaping platter of nachos, and tropical cocktails.

Later in the day, we added some thrills by renting a Sea-Doo. Thirty minutes may not seem like very long, but it is plenty. Dan was the driver and I held on tight, getting some air-time as we bounced over waves. We didn’t tip over, which was my biggest concern. It was a blast.

Our beach day was fabulous and overall, we really enjoyed our stay at the Doubletree in North Redington Beach. The beach is beautiful and the area is filled with restaurants and activities. As much as I’m obsessed with theme park vacations, visiting the Gulf Coast is an excellent alternative.

I will end on these sunrise shots of the beach. I love the soft pastel colors and sense of calm. On our next visit, I want to wake up early and go for a walk on the sand.

Arizona Road Trip 2019 - Meteor Crater Natural Landmark

We checked out of the Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak Resort early in the morning and started our drive to Flagstaff, stopping for breakfast at a Waffle House located on the outskirts of Phoenix. A visit to a Waffle House is something that I only associate with vacations. As far as I am aware, we don’t have them in California.

They are cheap greasy-spoons and the seats are all plastic, so that the syrup can be hosed off. It’s both gross and brilliant. My first Waffle House experience was in a dicey part of rural Georgia and it left me unimpressed, but since then, I’ve come to appreciate their particular brand of charm. Plus, the employees are always exceptionally welcoming and the people watching is first-class!

I’m not even a big fan of waffles, but what else are you going to order at a Waffle House?

Shortly after getting back on the road, we saw a mule crossing sign!

IMG_20190304_092044.jpg

On our drive, we saw so much cactus. It was perfect, Hollywood westerns style cactus.

A few hours later, the cactus gave way to pine trees and snow.

And the stunning San Francisco Peaks of the Coconino National Forest.

We learned that the Meteor Crater Natural Landmark was just a short drive beyond Flagstaff, so we added it to our itinerary, which meant that we would need to do a little backtracking on our drive. As previsiouly mentioned, Dan hates backtracking, but he was so excited to see the Meteor Crater Natural Landmark, that he didn’t even complain!

I have to admit that previous to this trip, I had never heard of Meteor Crater Natural Landmark. It’s a big deal and I have no excuse.

We stopped for gas at the Sinclair located in the Little America Travel Center. This place seemed very familiar, but it wasn’t until later in the evening, when we were in our hotel room and flipping through channels, that we realized why we knew it. We landed on a E Television special about the making of National Lampoon’s Vacation, a movie we’ve both seen a billion times and we saw that the Little America Travel Center was the location for the scene when Clark stops for gas and can’t find the gas tank. It was bizarre to have come across this program on the same day that we visited the filming location!

Also, someone needs to buy me the Sinclair stuffed dino. Dan offered and I said that I didn’t need it… but in retrospect, I totally need it. My birthday is in August. Put a bow on it and post it to me please. It’s so cute!

Meteor Crater Natural Landmark is the site of a meteor impact that happened fifty thousand years ago. It is massive: 560 feet deep, with a 0.737 mile diameter. The crater was discovered in the 19th century and became a popular place for scientists to study, formulating many theories as to the cause of the impact. NASA astronauts also used the crater site for training.

We visited Meteor Crater Natural Landmark on a Monday morning in early March. It was the perfect time to visit. We were among only a handful of tourists and it was easy to enjoy the crater lookout points and all of the exhibits. Looking at the size of the parking lot, this place gets packed. I cannot even imagine trying to visit during school holidays.

We spent about an hour at Meteor Crater Natural Landmark. The admission price was eighteen dollars for adults and included a small museum exhibit, access to the crater observation deck ( including hiking areas), and the option to take a free guided tour. Dan was most interested in looking at the crater and taking pictures, while I was more interested in the museum portion. We explored together and then split up to spend more time in each area.

UK August -October 2013- Premiere Inn Blackpool

You really should steer clear of Blackpool. It was the worst place that we visited on our UK trip. More on the town of Blackpool coming up, this review is for the hotel where we stayed during our night-stop.

Premiere Inn-Blackpool

Premiere Inn-Blackpool

Premiere Inn is a UK hotel chain that is on par with America's Motel Six brand. They are cheap and everywhere! We found availability at a Premiere Inn located adjacent to the airport and just a short walk from the tourist attractions in Blackpool. The walkability factor was a huge reason that we picked this particular hotel. The location was also desirable, because although it was close to the attractions, it wasn't right in the thick of things. It felt safer and cleaner.

We were given the last room available, a handicap accessible room on the first floor. The only thing that stood out about it being handicap accessible, was the larger bathroom and emergency cord. Otherwise, it looked like a standard room.

It's no frills, but I started out impressed with Premiere Inn.

The front desk clerk was nice, the room seem clean, it was fairly tastefully decorated (I like purple), they gave us thirty minutes free wi-fi.... actually, the free wi-fi won me over, because many of the places we stayed charged an absorbanent amount for wi-fi, so a free half hour made me happy. It was enough time to check my email and Facebook.

My impression of Premiere Inn changed when it was time for bed.

It was the worst night of sleep that I have ever had in a hotel. The mattress was fine, but the linens made my skin itch. I think that I may have been allergic to the detergent that they use, because my skin broke out into a rash and I couldn't stop scratching. It was miserable. It was bad enough that I will likely never stay at a Premiere Inn again. I travel frequently and I've never had this experience in any other hotel. It makes my skin crawl just thinking about it!

Stay tuned for our Blackpool Adventure...babies gambling, giant disco balls and the UK's largest water park!
