Social Distancing in Littleton: Week Nine

Week nine…whoa.

Things are getting confusing with the loosening of restrictions. More businesses are open and most people are wearing masks. Pretty much every store asks people to wear masks, but they do nothing to enforce the policy and there are those who refuse to comply, yet still shop. This is frustrating, but I can understand the hard position of the people working at the stores and store owners. The bizarre politics regarding masks has made for a tense environment. People have died from trying to enforce the rules. It’s crazy.

We went to Lowes last week to buy a new BBQ and maybe 90% of the people had on masks and were careful about distancing. To those who went mask-less, I was muttering “A**hole” as I passed them. I just don’t understand the resistance.

As far as I know, my friend’s aunt is the only person in my extended circle that has become infected. Truthfully, it is feeling like things are less serious, but I also don’t want to be naive and let my guard down. I’m still hopeful that we will be able to see the kids this summer.

Back to the BBQ…it ‘s great. I’ve missed having a BBQ. Dan spent Saturday evening building it and on Sunday, we feasted on steak. Heaven. We also got all of our new deck furniture from American Furniture Warehouse, including a table with a fire pit.

The weather was hot and summery all weekend and we spent it in our new garden. We had cocktails and sunbathed. It might be as close as we get to taking a vacation this year, but it certainly wasn’t shabby.

The garden is enclosed with a fence, so our indoor cats were allowed to enjoy it. They explored everything,

Tom proved to be quite the hunter and went after every bug, although I’m not sure that he managed to actually catch anything. Either way, it was cute, especially when he pounced like a rabbit.

Most of our neighbors have dogs, and the cats were fearless, actually wanting to go up to the fence to meet them. Luckily, all of the dogs proved to be friendly. We have to be careful of Slinky, because he is agile enough to jump the fence. Tom is too fat to escape.

I learned that the saying: “It’s just like riding a bicycle,” is bullshit.

Dan bought us bicycles last week and we have been riding nearly every night. The first two days I was pitiful. I rode a bicycle as a kid, but couldn’t remember what to do. I skidded along, rode at a snail’s pace, and freaked out every time I went over a small bump or a car came near me. I was so nervous.

It was much harder than I thought it would be. Part of the reason that I was so edgy, is about fifteen years ago, I did the “Muddy Buddy” race with my ex-husband. In the race, we worked as a team, alternating riding a bike and running, with difficult obstacles at various check-points where we switched off. The race was labeled as something that basically anyone could accomplish.

Lies!!!!

I decided to bike ride the first leg and it included a steep, downhill mountain biking portion. I had never done mountain biking and I saw a guy, clearly someone who was an experienced cyclist, wipe out in front of me. He was covered in blood with a tree branch piercing through his leg. He had to be evacuated. I got off the bike and walked it the rest of the way, shaking. Also, my randomly assigned race number was 666. I’m not superstitious, but maybe the universe was trying to tell me something?

Now my biking confidence is back and I’m enjoying our rides. The next improvement will be a better seat, which Dan purchased for us today. No more sore bottoms!

Last week when I blogged, the Survivor: Winners at War finale had not aired. I’m happy to report that my contestant pick in our bet with the neighbors, won- Tony!!! The neighbors have to make me a Mai Tai. Despite having to scale back on the fanfare, it was a great finale.

We haven’t been watching much TV, but we did watch the horror movie Fantasy Island. Based on the premise, I had really wanted to see this movie. It was a disappointment. Good concept, but the story was weak. The tone was odd; not true horror, more screwball comedy and heavy drama. It could have been great, but it suffered from not knowing what type of movie it wanted to be.

I was busy on Zoom, with the second half of my grammar class on Saturday and a meeting with my new writer’s group on Sunday.

When we were out, we took pictures of the low gas prices. If we are able to go on our road trip this summer, this will be great.

I usually close with cute cat pictures, but this time, I’m sharing a funny picture of me. Today, we had Chipotle for the first time since pre-Covid. And check out that quarantine hair and eye-brows. My next trip to the salon will like getting a complete make-over. You won’t recognize me!

Obligatory 2019 New Year's Resolutions Post

I know some people think it’s silly, but I love creating a New Year’s Resolution list. This isn’t to say that I don’t start other goals throughout the year, but there is something about the start of a new year that feels like the perfect time to reflect and initiate change.

As usual, I’m going to start by looking back on my 2018 resolutions.

1. Create a writing schedule with a focus on the revisions for my novel. - A big fail. I did write quite a bit in 2018, but I could not figure out a steady schedule. I could not figure out how to organize this aspect of my life.

2. Finish revising my novel and begin sending it out to agents. - I made a lot of progress on my novel and I am pleased with my progress, but the revision process has been much slower than anticipated.

3. Maintain blogging schedule of every other day. This has been my normal schedule for years, but life got in the way this year and I didn't always stick to it. I felt guilty when I didn't. - Epic fail. This was my most inconsistent blogging year to date. I am so back-logged. I feel like I really let myself down with this goal.

4. Read 75 or more books. - Hanging my head in shame. I only read 34 books. This is the least amount of reading that I’ve done in my adult life.

5. Maintain a food log and eliminate soda. - Fail. Although there is hope with this one. I just got a Fitbit and started tracking my food. This was after getting blood work done in December and realizing that I had to make changes.

6. Work on scanning old-family pictures. Try to get 1/4 of pictures scanned. This has been a resolution from years past that I never managed to accomplish. It's a big project. - Fail, no progress.

7. Work on family genealogy project. - Yes! I have been down the rabbit hole of family history quite a bit this year. It’s exciting and informative. I can trace back to the original colonists and I have family members who formed towns in Massachusetts. I also found out that the real life Hester Prynne ( from Nathanial Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter) had some sort of relationship with one of my ancestors and it was a scandal!

8. Super secret podcast idea- put into action! I'm very excited about this one. - I’ve worked on a plan and discussed it with a friend who has a Podcast, but I’ve not moved forward on this. I still feel momentum, but I’m not sure how to work it into my schedule.

9. Visit a new country, state or major city.- I traveled so much in 2018, but primarily to places that I’ve already visited. I did see some new cities in England, like Oxford and Windsor. I had many new experiences in the cities that I had previously visited.

10. Attend a writer's conference. I have my eye on the Las Vegas conference in the spring. - No. I’m kicking myself for this one too, although it simply did not work with our schedule or finances for this to happen in 2018.

2018 was a terrible year for resolutions, yet it was a fabulous year for life in general. I spent a lot of time developing relationships with family and friends. I ended one job and started another. Although my goals that I set at the start of the year fell flat, many new goals and opportunities appeared throughout the year. I don’t look at this list as a fail, but as an indication that things have changed.

Here are some of my wishes for 2019:

1. Creating a writing schedule with a focus on my novel = I’m carrying this over. I feel better about accomplishing this, because the last third of 2018 has seen a shift to a more consistent schedule. I’ve been waking up at 7am and I have a regular work schedule. I now need to fit writing time into that schedule. I need the routine to stick.

2. Attend a Writing Conference = I really want to attend AWP in Portland, but that might be a financial stretch. I still have my eye on Vegas.

3. Maintain a blogging schedule= I am shifting this goal to three days a week, rather than every other day. I need to be consistent about the posting days and times though.

4. Read 60 books or more = Achievable. I need to focus on meeting my book review schedule commitments from publishers and stay on track. I also need to whittle down my massive, over-flowing bookshelf.

5. Track food and get to a healthy weight = I need to lose a few pounds, not a lot, but a bit. The primary goal is to fix some issues from a recent blood test. I would like to focus on diet, rather than have these problems require medication. I will likely eliminate soda and cut back on sugar to reach these goals. I never had trouble losing weight when I am mindful.

6. Track steps and be mindful about exercise - I have a Fitbit and have started becoming more aware of my need to move more, especially when I have been glued to my computer all day. I’d also like to take some pilates classes at a local studio or join a gym.

7. Visit a new country, stare or major city

8. Scan in old-family photos and documents- I will be really disappointed if I don’t make progress towards this goal in 2019. It’s long over-due and I’m worried that something might happen to these precious objects.

9. Continue to work on family Genealogy project = I have an idea of how this might also turn into a novel project. I want to keep exploring and have a more concrete idea about connections

10. Work More, Save More, Spend Less = General mindfulness when it comes to finances. I’ve made progress towards this in the last 3-4 months.

11. Invest in my tutoring job = become certified to teach for language tests or create more teaching tools to have on hand.

When I look at all of these goals, the main theme seems to be mindfulness leading to creating good habits. I’m looking to make long-term changes. I also need to find a way to keep these routines, when life becomes less predictable = holidays, family visits, the unexpected, et… Rather than starting January 1st, my New Year’s reset will begin on January 14th, when I have returned home from a holiday trip to Europe.

Obligatory 2018 New Year's Resolution Post

It's time again to post my New Year's resolutions. I make various goals throughout the year (including a new resolution to eat better, which I started the first week in December), but I always like the idea of taking stock and starting fresh goals after the holidays.

First, let's check in with my 2017 resolutions and see what was or wasn't accomplished.

1. Finish my manuscript by the end of winter. = accomplished. I finished a first full draft and had my consultation with my mentor. I'm now slowly working through the revisions.

2. After receiving my manuscript notes from a UCLA Extension faculty member, use the notes to revise and polish my novel. Send my novel to potential agents. = Sort of. I'm still revising, not at the agent stage yet.

3. Finally figure out a sensible and effective writing schedule, which includes becoming more involved in my online writing group- submitting more, rather than just critiquing. = Fail. The online writing group was distracting, so I dropped it. My writing is spotty, in bursts and not consistent.

4. Submitting short stories and poems to contests/ journals. I'm not going to give myself a quota like last year, but I need to put myself out there.  = Sort of. I entered the NYC Midnight Short Story competition and passed the first two rounds. It was a lot of fun and I came away with two solid short stories.

5. Read a Minimum of 70 books. = Accomplished! I'm writing this review with a few weeks left in the year, but it looks like I'll end up with 78-79 books read. I also read many literary journals, not included in this count.

6. Cut out soda- This was a resolution that I stuck to for many years, but have slipped back into old habits this past year. Not that I drink a lot of soda, but still getting rid of empty, unhealthy calories.= Fail. I don't even remember this as a resolution for last year. Although, I have been soda free since December 1st.

7. When not traveling, use apartment gym a minimum of three days a week. I hate exercising, but need to get back into the routine. I had an amazing exercise routine for nearly two years and I felt, looked fabulous. I need that back. = Major fail. I used the gym, but not consistently. I also joined a gym in Big bear, but I've already canceled the membership. Part of the problem is I got sciatica in May and I've not felt well every since. Yoga helped a little, but I'm still having lingering issues.

8. Maintain a food diary and eat a minimum of five servings of fruits and veggies a day. This is for awareness, which will hopefully turn into healthy habits, something that's worked like a charm in the past. = Fail. Although I've been doing this for a few weeks and it does work!

9. Learn to enjoy living in Downtown Portland- get out of the apartment weekly to take advantage of what the city has to offer. Be present and active in our current living situation. = Sort of. I never learned to enjoy living in Portland, but we did make the most of it. We got out and saw things, attended local activities. My attitude did change towards living in Portland, but I was happy to move back to CA! I'm grateful for the experience of living in the Pacific North West and new friends made.

10. Travel to a new state or country ( or major city) = Yes! I went to Oklahoma City for the first time. We also visited Skagway, Alaska. We took many short trips around Oregon and Washington, seeing new things. My favorite was going to Astoria and seeing where one of my all-time favorite movies, The Goonies, was filmed.

11. Grow Travel Agency, by focusing on training, social media and the Easy as Pie Travel blog. I'm proud of what I've built so far and I've booked vacations for several clients, however, I want to be bigger. = Fail. We opted to close the travel agency, because it was more work than it was worth putting in to build. It distracted from my writing. No regrets with this one. Again, nothing to regret from the experience.

12. Grow the Always Packed for Adventure blog. Truly, this blog and it's readership has exceeded my expectations, but that makes me think that I can do even better.= Accomplished. My blog continues to grow in readership every month. It's exciting!

And now, time for those 2018 resolutions! I'm planning on starting most of these on January 8th, after my stepson finishes his visit with us for the holidays. I just want to have fun during his visit and not worry about schedules and goals.

1. Create a writing schedule with a focus on the revisions for my novel.

2. Finish revising my novel and begin sending it out to agents.

3. Maintain blogging schedule of every other day. This has been my normal schedule for years, but life got in the way this year and I didn't always stick to it. I felt guilty when I didn't.

4. Read 75 or more books.

5. Maintain a food log and eliminate soda.

6. Work on scanning old-family pictures. Try to get 1/4 of pictures scanned. This has been a resolution from years past that I never managed to accomplish. It's a big project.

7. Work on family genealogy project.

8. Super secret podcast idea- put into action! I'm very excited about this one.

9. Visit a new country, state or major city.

10. Attend a writer's conference. I have my eye on the Las Vegas conference in the spring.

Happy 2018 and thank you for reading my blog! May your year be filled with happiness, good health, and new adventures!
