Obligatory 2019 New Year's Resolutions Post

I know some people think it’s silly, but I love creating a New Year’s Resolution list. This isn’t to say that I don’t start other goals throughout the year, but there is something about the start of a new year that feels like the perfect time to reflect and initiate change.

As usual, I’m going to start by looking back on my 2018 resolutions.

1. Create a writing schedule with a focus on the revisions for my novel. - A big fail. I did write quite a bit in 2018, but I could not figure out a steady schedule. I could not figure out how to organize this aspect of my life.

2. Finish revising my novel and begin sending it out to agents. - I made a lot of progress on my novel and I am pleased with my progress, but the revision process has been much slower than anticipated.

3. Maintain blogging schedule of every other day. This has been my normal schedule for years, but life got in the way this year and I didn't always stick to it. I felt guilty when I didn't. - Epic fail. This was my most inconsistent blogging year to date. I am so back-logged. I feel like I really let myself down with this goal.

4. Read 75 or more books. - Hanging my head in shame. I only read 34 books. This is the least amount of reading that I’ve done in my adult life.

5. Maintain a food log and eliminate soda. - Fail. Although there is hope with this one. I just got a Fitbit and started tracking my food. This was after getting blood work done in December and realizing that I had to make changes.

6. Work on scanning old-family pictures. Try to get 1/4 of pictures scanned. This has been a resolution from years past that I never managed to accomplish. It's a big project. - Fail, no progress.

7. Work on family genealogy project. - Yes! I have been down the rabbit hole of family history quite a bit this year. It’s exciting and informative. I can trace back to the original colonists and I have family members who formed towns in Massachusetts. I also found out that the real life Hester Prynne ( from Nathanial Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter) had some sort of relationship with one of my ancestors and it was a scandal!

8. Super secret podcast idea- put into action! I'm very excited about this one. - I’ve worked on a plan and discussed it with a friend who has a Podcast, but I’ve not moved forward on this. I still feel momentum, but I’m not sure how to work it into my schedule.

9. Visit a new country, state or major city.- I traveled so much in 2018, but primarily to places that I’ve already visited. I did see some new cities in England, like Oxford and Windsor. I had many new experiences in the cities that I had previously visited.

10. Attend a writer's conference. I have my eye on the Las Vegas conference in the spring. - No. I’m kicking myself for this one too, although it simply did not work with our schedule or finances for this to happen in 2018.

2018 was a terrible year for resolutions, yet it was a fabulous year for life in general. I spent a lot of time developing relationships with family and friends. I ended one job and started another. Although my goals that I set at the start of the year fell flat, many new goals and opportunities appeared throughout the year. I don’t look at this list as a fail, but as an indication that things have changed.

Here are some of my wishes for 2019:

1. Creating a writing schedule with a focus on my novel = I’m carrying this over. I feel better about accomplishing this, because the last third of 2018 has seen a shift to a more consistent schedule. I’ve been waking up at 7am and I have a regular work schedule. I now need to fit writing time into that schedule. I need the routine to stick.

2. Attend a Writing Conference = I really want to attend AWP in Portland, but that might be a financial stretch. I still have my eye on Vegas.

3. Maintain a blogging schedule= I am shifting this goal to three days a week, rather than every other day. I need to be consistent about the posting days and times though.

4. Read 60 books or more = Achievable. I need to focus on meeting my book review schedule commitments from publishers and stay on track. I also need to whittle down my massive, over-flowing bookshelf.

5. Track food and get to a healthy weight = I need to lose a few pounds, not a lot, but a bit. The primary goal is to fix some issues from a recent blood test. I would like to focus on diet, rather than have these problems require medication. I will likely eliminate soda and cut back on sugar to reach these goals. I never had trouble losing weight when I am mindful.

6. Track steps and be mindful about exercise - I have a Fitbit and have started becoming more aware of my need to move more, especially when I have been glued to my computer all day. I’d also like to take some pilates classes at a local studio or join a gym.

7. Visit a new country, stare or major city

8. Scan in old-family photos and documents- I will be really disappointed if I don’t make progress towards this goal in 2019. It’s long over-due and I’m worried that something might happen to these precious objects.

9. Continue to work on family Genealogy project = I have an idea of how this might also turn into a novel project. I want to keep exploring and have a more concrete idea about connections

10. Work More, Save More, Spend Less = General mindfulness when it comes to finances. I’ve made progress towards this in the last 3-4 months.

11. Invest in my tutoring job = become certified to teach for language tests or create more teaching tools to have on hand.

When I look at all of these goals, the main theme seems to be mindfulness leading to creating good habits. I’m looking to make long-term changes. I also need to find a way to keep these routines, when life becomes less predictable = holidays, family visits, the unexpected, et… Rather than starting January 1st, my New Year’s reset will begin on January 14th, when I have returned home from a holiday trip to Europe.

Winter Holiday 2015/2016 - EPCOT Again

It was back to EPCOT for our final theme park day of the trip. We used fast passes for Mission Space, Test Track, and Spaceship Earth, but the bulk of this visit was spent in The World Showcase. On our previous visit, we went counter-clockwise, visiting Canada, the United Kingdom, France, and Morocco. This time, we went clockwise, starting with Mexico.

Inside Mexico's pyramid is the Gran Fiesta Tour boat ride. The Gran Fiesta Tour is a ride similar to the Magic Kingdom's It's a Small World. It's a bit dated and cheesy, even with a refurbishment that now includes The Three Cabelleros, but it's a must-do every trip.

Norway, with its grass covered houses and trolls, is one of my favorite pavilions. I have Norwegian ancestors, so I'm kind of obligated to love this pavilion. It was a bit of a construction zone, as they were turning the Maelstrom ride into Frozen Ever After. We perused the gift shop, where we found a jar of lingonberry jam with the same name as my Swedish stepson, Felix. Also perfume designer, Geir Ness was visiting. Many years ago, I bought a bottle of Laila: The Essence of Norway, and Ness signed the bottle for me. I think he must live in Florida, because every time I visit, he's at EPCOT making an appearance. Laila is a lovely fragrance, and after discovering it at EPCOT, I've since learned that I can purchase it at my local Nordstrom.

China, with its colorful archway, blue pagoda, and manicured gardens, is one of the prettiest pavilions.

Germany has one of my favorite dining options, The Biergarten, where you can pretend you're at Oktoberfest, dining on schnitzel and beer, while doing the chicken dance.

By the time we reached Italy, we were desperate for lunch. Our idea of not making dining reservations and keeping it flexible, was working against us. Even though the holiday crowds had died down, the restaurants were mostly booked up. We discovered that Tutto Gusto, the wine cellar in Italy, does not take advanced reservations, and although they were busy, we were able to get a table. The food was amazing. We splashed out with an antipasti starter, a wine sampler, lasagna for mains, and two desserts. It was so good, that we took the kids back in the summer. I highly recommend Tutto Gusto!

In the middle of the World Showcase stands the United States Pavilion. Housed in the colonial style building is The American Adventure, a show which utilizes animatronics and film to explain the history of America. At the risk of sounding sentimental, I always find it to be a bit of an emotional experience. It's beautifully done. Make sure to arrive early to see the mini-museum, and to hear The Voices of Liberty, an a'cappella group that performs before the show.

Japan has the best shopping, I'm not just talking about my love for all things Sanrio, although the Sanrio offerings are significant. I could get lost for days in the Mitsukoshi Department Store. They also have an amazing teppanyaki restaurant, and a cool museum, that had an exhibit on Japan's cute culture. I think she is no longer works at EPCOT, but they used to have a woman who sculpted animals out of candy. It was amazing! She was so talented and could really make any animal. Look her up on Youtube!

We finally made it to Morocco, where we had ended our first visit to The World Showcase.

We had a special surprise as my friend, Carrie and her husband, Dave, were also visiting WDW. I knew Carrie in high school and we also worked together at Universal Studios Hollywood. I had not seen her in many years and we had not met each others spouses. It was pouring rain, but we talked for hours. We were so excited over catching up, that we didn't even take a picture together! Dan and I had to leave by the late afternoon, to get to the airport and return our rental car, otherwise I'm sure we would have hung out all night.

A finally EPCOT picture...this was taken by a cast member when we were near Norway, but it's my favorite, so I wanted to save it for last. It was sad to end our trip, but knowing we were returning in the summer, we converted our multi-day tickets into Annual Passes. It's always easier to leave, when you know you'll soon return.

Obligatory 2017 New Years Resolution Post

I love New Year's Resolutions. I'm a list-making, goal-driven type of person. New Years is a traditional time to reset those goals, although I always pick dates throughout the year to reevaluate and begin new resolutions. I just like the resolution momentum that New Years always brings. If I don't stick to all of my resolutions ( I don't, who does?), I'm okay with focusing on what I did manage to accomplish. I'm a glass half-full type of person.

Let's see how I did with my 2016 resolutions, that I publicly declared on this blog.

1. Finish UCLA Extension Fiction Writing Program - I finished the program last winter, a year ahead of schedule, with more classes completed than needed, and I finished with honors. Yeah, I'm proud of this!

2. Finish the 1st Draft and 1st complete revision of my novel.- Still working on this. The progress is slower than I would have liked.

3. Attend two or more writer's conferences - I attended one, the AWP Conference in Los Angeles. It was amazing. I left feeling inspired and rejuvenated.

4. Start or join a writer's group- I joined an online writing group in early fall.

5. Submit my work to a minimum of fifteen publications/contests- This was a complete fail. I didn't enter a single contest or send my work out anywhere.

6. Create/stick to, a regular writing schedule-find my optimum writing time- I've not yet figured this out.

7. Read a minimum of 60 Books - I read sixty-eight books. I also stepped up my literary journal reading, which is not counted in this goal.

8. Travel to a new state or country - I went to Alaska! And although I had already been to Washington State, this year I visited Seattle for the first time. It's a major city, so I thought it was worth a mention. I also moved to a new state and I am exploring Oregon.

9. Keep a food/exercise journal- exception is the family vacation - I stopped and started this many times. I was still working out with my personal trainer for the first quarter of 2016, but when that stopped, I got derailed. My diet/weight is currently worse that it has ever been, and needs to be fixed.

10. Starting January 4th- cut sugar, alcohol, fried food from diet- except on vacation or very special occasions ( Days ending in Y are not always special), but continue after vacations - See number nine.

11. Scan and Organize 1/4 of family photos.- This has been a resolution for years and it's still not done. My pictures are all stored in boxes in California, so this is not a goal that I can easily make happen in 2017.

12. Organize and maintain paperwork/filing cabinet.- This was organized until we moved. and now it's in bags all over our new apartment. I need to organize our office in Portland.

So I did okay, especially considering all of the upheaval that 2016 rained down on my life. It was an exceptionally chaotic year. I hope 2017 will be more stable, and to that end, here are my resolutions.

2017 RESOLUTIONS

1. Finish my manuscript by the end of winter.

2. After receiving my manuscript notes from a UCLA Extension faculty member, use the notes to revise and polish my novel. Send my novel to potential agents.

3. Finally figure out a sensible and effective writing schedule, which includes becoming more involved in my online writing group- submitting more, rather than just critiquing.

4. Submitting short stories and poems to contests/ journals. I'm not going to give myself a quota like last year, but I need to put myself out there.

5. Read a Minimum of 70 books

6. Cut out soda- This was a resolution that I stuck to for many years, but have slipped back into old habits this past year. Not that I drink a lot of soda, but still getting rid of empty, unhealthy calories.

7. When not traveling, use apartment gym a minimum of three days a week. I hate exercising, but need to get back into the routine. I had an amazing exercise routine for nearly two years and I felt, looked fabulous. I need that back.

8. Maintain a food diary and eat a minimum of five servings of fruits and veggies a day. This is for awareness, which will hopefully turn into healthy habits, something that's worked like a charm in the past.

9. Learn to enjoy living in Downtown Portland- get out of the apartment weekly to take advantage of what the city has to offer. Be present and active in our current living situation.

10. Travel to a new state or country ( or major city)

11. Grow Travel Agency, by focusing on training, social media and the Easy as Pie Travel blog. I'm proud of what I've built so far and I've booked vacations for several clients, however, I want to be bigger.

12. Grow the Always Packed for Adventure blog. Truly, this blog and it's readership has exceeded my expectations, but that makes me think that I can do even better. A big Thank You to all of my consistent readers. I love hearing your comments and reading emails. I've met many wonderful people through this blog.

That seems like enough to focus on for 2017. I'm hoping for a calm, peaceful 2017, where I can really focus on creating healthy habits and a routine that helps achieve goals. Also, just because I like to have those specific dates, these are to begin not on January 1st, but when we return from England on January 3rd. I'm filling up on Cadbury chocolate before I start those healthy eating goals!

Happy 2017 Everyone!
